TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a tire having a tread of a rubber composition with compositional limitations containing minimal, if any, of in situ formed volatile alcohol byproduct (e.g., ethanol).
Abstract: The invention relates to a tire having a tread of a rubber composition with compositional limitations containing minimal, if any, of in situ formed volatile alcohol byproduct. The tread component rubber composition contains a combination or pre-hydrophobated silica reinforcement and siloxane functionalized styrene/butadiene copolymer elastomer. The pre-hydrophobated silica is prepared, prior to mixing with the elastomer(s), by reacting hydroxyl groups (e.g. silanol groups) contained on the surface of a precipitated silica with an alkoxyorganomercaptosilane or with a bis-3(triethoxysilylpropyl)polysulfide which contains an average of from 2 to 4 connecting sulfur atoms in its polysulfidic bridge to form a composite thereof which may optionally include an alkyl silane. The volatile alcohol byproduct (e.g. ethanol) therefrom is thereby removed from the pre-hydrophobated silica composite prior to its introduction into the rubber composition(s).

TL;DR: In this paper, precipitated silica agglomerates (referred to as PSA) were crosslinked with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TO-CNF) as a reinforcement in the presence of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), via a facile dual metal synthesis approach.
Abstract: Silicon-containing compounds such as silica are effective heavy metal sorbents which can be employed in many applications. This is attributed to the porous nature of hydrothermally-stable silica, endowing such materials with high surface area and rich surface chemistry, all responsible for improving adsorption and desorption performance. However, to this day, the wide application of silica is limited by its skeletal brittleness and high production cost coupled with a risky traditional supercritical drying method. To solve the named problems, herein, precipitated silica agglomerates (referred to as PSA) was crosslinked with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TO-CNF) as a reinforcement in the presence of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), via a facile dual metal synthesis approach, is reported. The resultant new silica-based sponges (TO-CNF PSA) showed desirable properties of flexibility, porosity and multifaceted sorption of various heavy metals with re-usability. The experimental results showed maximum adsorption capacities of 157.7, 33.22, 140.3 and 130.5 mg g−1 for Pb(II), Hg(II), Cr(III) and Cd(II) ions, respectively. Such a facile approach to modify silica materials by attaching active groups together with reinforcement can provide improved and reliable silica-based materials which can be applied in water treatment, gas purification, thermal insulation etc.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a non-black colored rubber with a rubber tread of a lug and groove configuration and may be of a co-extruded cap/base construction, where at least a part of the visible portion of the tread is exclusive of carbon black and thereby of a color other than black.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a tire having a rubber tread of a lug and groove configuration and which may be of a co-extruded cap/base construction; wherein at least a part of the visible portion of the tread is exclusive of carbon black and thereby of a color other than black. Such non-black colored rubber includes the outer surface of at least one of said tread lugs intended to be ground-contacting. In one aspect of the invention, said non-black colored rubber composition contains (A) a precipitated silica reinforcement which has been pre-treated with a hydrophobation agent and optionally also pre-treated with a coupling agent or (B) a precipitated silica which has been pre-treated with a hydrophobating agent and a coupling agent which does not from an alcohol byproduct upon reacting with hydroxyl groups (e.g. silanol groups) contained on the surface of said precipitated silica. In another aspect of the invention, said non-black colored rubber composition is comprised of at least one diene based elastomer and a brominated poly(isobutylene-co-para-methylstyrene) where a coupling agent for said silica is an organo phosphite.
