TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for sustaining efficiency of switched mode power converters over wide load ranges is presented, which can be used with any switch-mode power converter having at least one synchronous rectifier (Q2) capable of being enabled or disabled and coupled, either by direct connection or otherwise, to an inductor (L1) and a diode rectifier(D1), to provide a current path for the inductor current when the Q2 is disabled.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for sustaining efficiency of switched mode power converters over wide load ranges. The method and apparatus can be used with any switched mode power converter having at least one synchronous rectifier (Q2) capable of being enabled or disabled and coupled, either by direct connection or otherwise, to an inductor (L1) and a diode rectifier (D1), to provide a current path for the inductor current when the synchronous rectifier (Q2) is disabled. The power converter is initialized by enabling the synchronous rectifier (Q2). Occasionally, the synchronous rectifier (Q2) is disabled, and the energy stored in the inductor (L1) is detected by sensing a voltage representative of the energy stored in the inductor (L1). A power level signal is then generated indicating whether the power converter is operating above a selected threshold. The power converter is configured in response to the power level signal by enabling the synchronous rectifier (Q2) if the power level is above the threshold or by disabling the synchronous rectifier (Q2) otherwise. The steps of disabling, detecting, generating, and configuring are repeated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the conception and analysis of a unidirectional hybrid three-phase rectifier suitable for medium and high power applications, which is composed of a single-switch diode bridge boost-type rectifier in parallel with a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) 3-phase UFD rectifier, and the rectifier topology, principle of operation, control scheme, and simulation results of a 20kW laboratory prototype are also presented.
Abstract: This paper describes the conception and analysis of a unidirectional hybrid three-phase rectifier suitable for medium- and high-power applications. The rectifier is composed of a single-switch diode bridge boost-type rectifier in parallel with a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) three-phase unidirectional boost rectifier. The objective is to obtain a structure capable of providing sinusoidal input currents with low harmonic distortion and dc output voltage regulation. The diode rectifier operates at low frequency and has a higher output power rating. Therefore, the PWM unidirectional rectifier is designed to operate with a small power rating and at a high switching frequency. The total harmonic distortion of the proposed structure varies between 0% and 32%, depending only on the amount of power processed by the PWM three-phase unidirectional rectifier. The rectifier topology conception, principle of operation, control scheme, and simulation and experimental results of a 20-kW laboratory prototype are also presented in this paper.

TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic high frequency supply, such as a lamp ballast, having a full-wave rectifier, a storage capacitor charged to a voltage greater than the peak of the rectifier output, and an isolating diode between the rectifiers and the diode, is presented.
Abstract: An electronic high frequency supply, such as a lamp ballast, having a full-wave rectifier, a storage capacitor charged to a voltage greater than the peak of the rectifier output, and an isolating diode between the rectifier and the diode. An inverter is connected to the energy storage capacitor, and has a high frequency inductive load circuit connected between the inverter output and a junction between the isolating diode and the storage capacitor. A capacitor, connected to the junction in parallel with a series circuit formed by the isolating diode and storage capacitor, forms a high frequency resonance circuit with the inductive load circuit. Current is drawn from the rectifier only as a series of pulses at the inverter frequency. To minimize variation in the high frequency load current, the inverter frequency is varied according to a sensed parameter which varies during each cycle of the rectifier output.

TL;DR: In this article, an operational-amplifier supply-current sensing is employed in the design of high-performance precision rectification circuits, which are constructed from low supply bias-current operational amplifiers and current mirrors.
Abstract: Operational-amplifier supply-current sensing is employed in the design of high-performance precision rectification. The designs presented in this paper compare favourably with conventional precision rectifier circuits both in linearity and bandwidth, and are constructed from low supply bias-current operational amplifiers and current mirrors. Application of this new rectifying technique in the design of precision peak-detector circuits is also described.

TL;DR: In this article, the primary and secondary windings and filter inductors of the current-doubler rectifier stages are provided on an integrated magnetic core, and the filter inductor in each current-dubler rectifier stage can be provided as coupled inductors.
Abstract: A technique, which substantially reduces the number of power-stage and control circuit components in an isolated DC/DC converter with parallel current-doubler rectifier stages, includes on the primary side transformers with serially connected primary windings each having a corresponding secondary winding coupled to one of the voltage-doubler stages. In one embodiment, the primary and secondary windings and filter inductors of the current-doubler rectifier stages are provided on an integrated magnetic core. The filter inductors in each current-doubler rectifier stage can be provided as coupled inductors. In one embodiment, an X-shaped magnetic core is provided to achieve coupled or uncoupled filter inductors.
