Abstract: Background One of the key tools for determining the social structure of wild and endangered primates is the ability to sex DNA from small amounts of non-invasive samples that are likely to include highly degraded DNA. Traditional markers for molecular sex determination of primates are developed on the basis of the human sequence and are often non-functional in distantly related primate species. Hence, it is highly desirable to develop markers that simultaneously detect Y- and X-chromosome specific sequences and also work across many species.

Abstract: Metacognition refers to thinking about thinking, and there has been a great deal of interest in how this ability manifests across primates. Based on much of the work to date, a tentative division has been drawn with New World monkeys on 1 side and Old World monkeys and apes on the other. Specifically, Old World monkeys, apes, and humans often show patterns reflecting metacognition, but New World monkeys typically do not, or show less convincing behavioral patterns. However, recent data suggest that this difference may relate to other aspects of some experimental tasks. For example, 1 possibility is that risk tolerance affects how capuchin monkeys, a New World primate species, tend to perform. Specifically, it has recently been argued that on tasks in which there are 2 or 3 options, the "risk" of guessing is tolerable for capuchins because there is a high probability of being correct even if they "know they do not know" or feel something akin to uncertainty. The current study investigated this possibility by manipulating the degree of risk (2-choices vs. 6-choices) and found that capuchin monkeys used the uncertainty response more on 6-choice trials than on 2-choice trials. We also found that rate of reward does not appear to underlie these patterns of performance, and propose that the degree of risk is modulating capuchin monkeys' use of the uncertainty response. Thus, the apparent differences between New and Old World monkeys in metacognition may reflect differences in risk tolerance rather than access to metacognitive states.

Abstract: The present study was designed to assess a monkey's perception of specific visual stimuli by measuring both the behavioral responses and duration of attention to the presentation of photographic slides. Five adult male cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) were placed individually in an open field apparatus and presented a series of slides consisting of apples, a gorilla mask, a collage of colors, a human being, and a plain field. The slide of the gorilla mask followed by that of the human being received the most attention while the plain field received the least. In addition, the gorilla mask and human being elicited a range of behavioral responses with the higher ranking animals displaying a greater number of aggressive responses and the lower ranking animals displaying a greater number of submissive gestures. Taken together, these data would suggest that the slides of the gorilla mask and the human being were perceived by the monkeys as threatening. These results are consistent with a continuing theme observed among a number of studies of primate social perception — namely, that potentially threatening stimuli are a significant determinant of visual observing.

Abstract: Genetically transmitted retroviruses of Old and New World monkeys include type C viruses isolated from baboons (M7), macaque (MAC-1), and owl monkeys (OMC-1) and type D viruses from langurs (PO-1-Lu) and squirrel monkeys (SMRV, M534). Each of these isolates is unrelated to the others by nucleic acid hybridization criteria and contains a unique array of virion-associated proteins which can be resolved by agarose gel filtration and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions. The major structural protein of each virus has a distinct primary structure, as determined by two-dimensional tryptic peptide analysis, and is antigenically different from the others. The major virion phosphoproteins of endogenous primate type C viruses (pp15) are also different from those of type D viruses (pp13-pp14). Immunological and structural analyses show that the endogenous langur virus and the horizontally transmitted Mason-Pfizer virus of rhesus monkeys are closely related to one another, consistent with the sequence homology detected in their RNA genomes. Although certain radioimmunoassays detect interspecies antigenic determinants common to either the p30 or gp70 proteins of some of these viruses, no one assay has yet been designed which can detect all groups of endogenous primate retroviridae. The data lead to the conclusion that primates contain a minimum of three different sets of genetically transmitted type C and type D retroviral genes.
