Abstract: There is broad consensus that the strains of imprisonment and unsupported release affect offenders’ mental health and operate to the detriment of their chances of successful reintegration. Drawing on data from 208 male inmates, the authors examine the mediating and moderating influences of social support on the links between inmates’ perceptions of prison conditions and other background variables on parolees’ feelings of hostility—a factor theoretically linked to reoffending—upon release. The results demonstrate that social support partially or completely mediates background characteristics and conditions the influence of prison perceptions on released inmates’ levels of hostility.

Abstract: The prevalence of AIDS is five times higher among prison inmates than in the general population. Because recidivism is common and many inmates are serving short sentences for parole violation, HIV-seropositive inmates move frequently between prison and their home communities. We designed an eight-session prerelease intervention for HIV seropositive inmates to decrease sexual and drug-related risk behavior and to increase use of community resources after release. The intervention sessions were delivered at the prison by community service providers. We found that a prerelease risk reduction intervention for HIV seropositive inmates was feasible. Descriptive results support the effectiveness of the program in reducing sexual and drug-related behaviors and in increasing use of community resources after release. Compared with men who signed up for the intervention but were unable to attend, men who received the intervention reported more use of community resources and less sexual and drug-related risk behavior in the months following release. We recommend dissemination and continued evaluation of this risk-reduction intervention.

Abstract: This paper explores the impact of the incarceration and return of individuals from prison on their families, including relationships with intimate partners, adult family members, and children. Based on responses from 247 family members of Chicago-bound male prisoners interviewed several months after their imprisoned family members were released, we describe the personal circumstances of the families of returning prisoners, the frequency and type of contact with the imprisoned family members, and the level of family support for the former prisoners after release. We discuss some of the hardships the family members experience during the incarceration and reentry process, and some of the support networks that these family members rely upon, as they face challenges associated with prisoner reentry—the challenges of supporting a family member who has recently been released from prison. We also examine areas of assistance and support that family members of recently released prisoners identified as needed. Findings indicate that these family members are highly supportive of their formerly incarcerated relative, providing financial and emotional support. But family members also experience significant hardships during the reentry period, including financial strain and increased anxiety. Finally, we discuss the policy implications of these findings for developing correctional and community programs and offer suggestions for further research on family issues regarding prisoner reentry.
