Abstract: Despite that formal and informal quality aspects are of significantimportance to business process modeling, there is only little empiricalwork reported on process model quality and its impact factors. Inthis paper we investigate understandability as a proxy for quality of processmodels and focus on its relations with personal and model characteristics.We used a questionnaire in classes at three European universitiesand generated several novel hypotheses from an exploratory data analysis.Furthermore, we interviewed practitioners to validate our findings.The results reveal that participants tend to exaggerate the differences inmodel understandability, that self-assessment of modeling competenceappears to be invalid, and that the number of arcs in models has animportant influence on understandability.

Abstract: Innovative e-business projects start with a design of the e-business model.We often encounter the view, in research as well as industry practice, that an e-business model is similar to a business process model, and so can be specified using UML activity diagrams or Petri nets. In this paper, we explain why this is a misunderstanding. The root cause is that a business model is not about process but about value exchanged between actors. Failure to make this separation of concerns leads to poor business decision-making and inadequate business requirements.

Abstract: The process model of strategic business exit (SBE) maps the activities of different levels of management onto the business and corporate levels of strategy making involved in Intel Corporation's exit from its core dynamic random access memory (DRAM) business. The SBE process model contributes to the development of an evolutionary process theory of strategy making by conceptualizing the pattern of managerial activities through which resources and corporate competencies are internally redirected toward more viable business opportunities, and the strategic context of a core business dissolves. The SBE process model corroborates the usefulness of the Bower-Burgelman process model for conceptualizing strategy making in complex organizations.
