Abstract: It is increasingly common to see computer-based simulation being used as a vehicle to model and analyze business processes in relation to process management and improvement. While there are a number of business process management (BPM) and business process simulation (BPS) methodologies, approaches and tools available, it is more desirable to have a systemic BPS approach for operational decision support, from constructing process models based on historical data to simulating processes for typical and common problems. In this paper, we have proposed a generic approach of BPS for operational decision support which includes business processes modeling and workflow simulation with the models generated. Processes are modeled with event graphs through process mining from workflow logs that have integrated comprehensive information about the control-flow, data and resource aspects of a business process. A case study of a credit card application is presented to illustrate the steps involved in constructing an event graph. The evaluation detail is also given in terms of precision, generalization and robustness. Based on the event graph model constructed, we simulate the process under different scenarios and analyze the simulation logs for three generic problems in the case study: 1) suitable resource allocation plan for different case arrival rates; 2) teamwork performance under different case arrival rates; and 3) evaluation and prediction for personal performances. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to model business processes using event graphs and simulate the processes for common operational decision support which collectively play an important role in process management and improvement.

Abstract: This article presents a general multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model aimed at providing decision support for waste and resources management in industrial networks. The MILP model combines material flow analysis, process models of waste treatments and other industrial processes, life cycle assessment, and mathematical optimization techniques within a unified framework. The optimization is based on a simplified representation of industrial networks that makes use of linear process models to describe the flows of mass and energy. Waste-specific characteristics, e.g. heating value or heavy metal contamination, are considered explicitly along with potential technologies or process configurations. The systems perspective, including both provision of waste treatment and industrial production, enables constraints imposed upon the systems, e.g. available treatment capacities, to be explicitly considered in the model. The model output is a set of alternative system configurations in terms of distribution of waste and resources that optimize environmental and economic performance. The MILP also enables quantification of the improvement potential compared to a given reference state. Trade-offs between conflicting objectives are identified through the generation of a set of Pareto-efficient solutions. This information supports the decision making process by revealing the quantified performance of the efficient trade-offs without relying on weighting being expressed prior to the analysis. Key features of the modeling approach are illustrated in a hypothetical case. The optimization model described in this article is applied in a subsequent paper (Part II) to assess and optimize the thermal treatment of sewage sludge in a region in Switzerland.

Abstract: E-commerce and online shopping with a third-party payment platform have rapidly developed recently, and encountered many fault tolerance and security problems concerned by users. The causes of these problems include malicious behavior and imperfect business processes. The latter lead to the emergence of security vulnerabilities and loss of user funds which become more and more serious these years. We focus on the business process of e-commerce, and propose a formal model for constructing an e-commerce business process called an E-commerce Business Process Net. It integrates both data and control flows based on Petri nets. Rationality and transaction consistency are defined and validated to guarantee the transaction properties of an e-commerce business process. This paper offers a complete methodology for modeling and validating an e-commerce system with a third-party payment platform from the view point of a business process. Its use enables a designer to identify errors early in the design process and correct them before the deployment phase. In order to demonstrate the applicability and feasibility of the methodology, we have modeled and validated a real-world e-commerce business process and discovered the problems that cause the violation of transaction properties.

Abstract: Object-oriented modeling has become the de-facto standard in the early phases of a software development process during the last decade. The current state-of-the-art is dominated by the existence of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the development of which has been initiated and pushed by industry. This paper presents a list of requirements for an ideal object-oriented modeling language and compares it with the achievements of UML and other object-oriented modeling approaches. This forms the base for the discussion of a roadmap for object-oriented modeling, which is structured according to a classification scheme of six different themes, which are language-, modelor process-related, respectively.
