Abstract: Processes are the core of organisations. Business Process Management (BPM) argues organisations can gain competitive advantage by improving and innovating their processes through a holistic process-oriented view. An organisation can be more or less process-oriented depending on their experience in applying process thinking for better results. The aim of this paper is to define a framework for identifying characteristics of Business Process Orientation and to provide a valid tool for measuring the degree of Business Process Orientation (BPO) of an organisation based on empirical research in 30 international organisations. A holistic view on integrated process management and change is taken as a starting point.

Abstract: Purpose – To construct, test and illustrate a sophisticated and theory-based architecture for analyzing business process management systems (BPMS) used for business process change. Design/methodology/approach – Exploration of business process modeling-based BPMS via a meta-survey of academic and business literatures. Two main dimensions are used based upon semiotics and a block-based BPMS pyramid architecture. Each block is a core technology required for the functioning of the BPMS and include: the subject being modeled; the software formalism; the IT infrastructure; the modeling language and notation; and the underlying technical infrastructure. Findings – Theoretically explains and empirically illustrates each core technology in the proposed architecture then does the same for the architecture, its arrangement as a whole and its interrelationships. Recognizes the lack of a theoretical basis for business process modeling constructs and the dangers that this generates. Explains why automatic BPMS require formal construct transmission from subject modeled to modeling hardware and software. Research limitations/implications – The architecture’s core technologies span numerous disciplines so each set of literatures introduces the component concepts and their bases but is not exhaustive. Originality/value – This paper proposes a considerably more sophisticated framework for BPMS analysis than is currently available; it is theoretically and not just empirically based; it uses a novel method of theoretical justification concerned with the transmission of modeled properties and characteristics between several technological media; and it illustrates the innovative analytical use of this architecture and the practical use of BPMS with three different case vignettes.

Abstract: Artificial neural networks were evaluated for monitoring and control of the variable polarity plasma arc welding (VPPAW) process. Three areas of welding application were investigated: weld process modeling, weld process control, and weld bead profile analysis for quality control. Experiments and analysis confirm that artificial neural networks are powerful tools for analysis, modeling, and control applications. They are particularly attractive in view of their capabilities to process nonlinear and noisy data, learn from actual welding data, and execute at relatively high speed. It is shown that neural networks are capable of modeling parameters of the VPPAW process to on the order of 10% accuracy or better. The same was observed when neural networks were used to select welding equipment parameters and the resulting bead geometries were estimated. These performance figures suggest that a VPPA welding control system can be implemented based on neural network models and control mechanisms. >

Abstract: Standard off-the-shelf requirements engineering processes have become a key to conceptualizing any integrated, corporate-wide solution based on packaged enterprise resource planning software. A generic RE model offers defined processes, suggests process stakeholders, specifies steps to accomplish tasks, indicates task dependencies, and provides standard tool support for ERP RE. Essentially, any off-the-shelf RE process is about composition and reconciliation: you start with a general set of business process and data requirements, then explore standard ERP functionality to see how closely it matches your organization's process and data needs.

Abstract: Sense-making of process models is an important task in various phases of business process management initiatives. Despite this, there is currently hardly any support in business process modeling tools to adequately support model comprehension. In this paper we adapt the concept of syntax highlighting to workflow nets, a modeling technique that is frequently used for business process modeling. Our contribution is three-fold. First, we establish a theoretical argument to what extent highlighting could improve comprehension. Second, we formalize a concept for syntax highlighting in workflow nets and present a prototypical implementation with the WoPeD modeling tool. Third, we report on the results of an experiment that tests the hypothetical benefits of highlighting for comprehension. Our work can easily be transferred to other process modeling tools and other process modeling techniques.
