Abstract: This paper briefly reviews the first participation of human factors engineering in the identification and solution of manufacturing problems at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. Electronics manufacturing management recognized the need for human factors engineering when new programs, more stringent quality requirements, and hiring of unskilled personnel gave rise to process control problems. During a six-month study period, many problems in the manufacturing area were discovered and reported, and those judged most critical were selected for detailed analysis and resolution. Many of the resulting recommendations were adopted, including major changes in design of manufacturing work stations.

TL;DR: The current preoccupation with management information and control systems suggests an important new field of application now open to control engineers as discussed by the authors, and their practical experience in the design of complex systems over many years surely qualifies them to make a useful contribution.
Abstract: The current preoccupation with management information and control systems suggests an important new field of application now open to control engineers. Their practical experience in the design of complex systems over many years surely qualifies them to make a useful contribution. Most so-called management systems are still not much more than adaptations of traditional practices developed round organisational functions or narrow disciplinary approaches. True management systems imply the need for overall control, and demand specialised design procedures which cut across functional and disciplinary barriers. A brief consideration of some of the individual approaches in the field, however, will illustrate the difficulty in reaching a consensus even on basic principles.
