Abstract: This paper presents a hierarchical approach to plan and schedule production in a manufacturing environment that can be modeled as a single stage process. Initially, the basic tradeoffs inherent to production planning decisions are represented by means of an aggregate model, which is solved on a rolling horizon basis. Subsequently, the first solution of the aggregate plan is disaggregated, considering additional cost objectives and detailed demand constraints. Several improvements in the methodology related to hierarchical production planning are suggested. Special attention is given to alternative disaggregation procedures, problems of infeasibilities, and the treatment of high setup costs. Computational results, based on real life data, are presented and discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on research on some aspects of production control and information system design that may explain some of the failures often encountered in production control systems, such as failure detection.
Abstract: Production control and information system design is a fast developing field, in theory and well as in practice. Many production organizations have tried to improve their control performance and their information systems, either by implementing standard software packages for production control or by developing customized production control software themselves. All too often, however, these projects do not fully achieve their purpose. This book reports on research on some aspects of production control and information system design that may explain some of the failures often encountered.

Abstract: The U. S. Army's new M1 9 binocular, which incorporates an unusual modular assembly concept for simplified maintainability, is currently being produced at the rate of 2,000 per month. In succeeding sections of this paper, the origin and development by the Army of the modular concept for this binocular are reviewed briefly and performance requirements are summarized. Following this, the manufacturing engineering approach and implementation developed and carried out by the Optical Division of Bell & Howell Company in producing the M19 binocular are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the All Electric Airplane (AEA) is described in relation to the increasing fuel problems, which are impacting on the economic viability of the aerospace industry and the emergence of an AE in the role of an energy efficient transport.
Abstract: The emergence of an All Electric Airplane in the role of an energy efficient transport is described in relation to the increasing fuel problems, which are impacting on the economic viability of the aerospace industry. The paper reviews the All Electric Airplane (which performs electrically all those functions normally powered by hydraulics, pneumatics and engine bleed air) for its impact upon the design/implementation of the aircraft systems, the advanced technology engines, the aircraft's ground-logistic support, and the producibility aspects of these advanced transport aircraft. The simplification of engine design and the prospective improvements in its specific-fuel-consumption are highlighted along with the overall simplification of the aircraft production aspects of the All Electric Airplane.

TL;DR: In this article, a production capability for rigid armor panels molded from cross-plied, unidirectionally oriented polypropylene film was established for the contingency of meeting estimated military needs for a period of two years after completion of the contract and, to establish a base and plans which may be used to meet expanded requirements.
Abstract: : The general objective of this project was to establish a production capability for rigid armor panels molded from cross-plied, unidirectionally oriented polypropylene film. Armor of this type has applicability as a radome material. The purpose of establishing this production capability is to provide for the contingency of meeting estimated military needs for a period of two years after completion of the contract and, to establish a base and plans which may be used to meet expanded requirements. to fulfill the stated objective it was necessary to complete the following tasks: Engineering Sample Phase: design and proof tooling; verify processes which were furnished at the beginning of the project; and preliminary testing; Confirmatory Sample Phase: fabrication of sufficient samples using the established process for more comprehensive testing; and testing of samples; and Demonstration Phase: document process used and equipment required; and brief interested parties and conduct complete process demonstration. These tasks were successfully performed and the general objective of this project has been achieved. A production capability for polypropylene armor has been established, and in the process, opportunities for additional process advances have been identified.
