TL;DR: This paper presents the techniques and methods that enable this new approach in production engineering by transferring biological principles from the field of genetics into the manufacturing environment.
Abstract: Parts which inherently store data about their fabrication and find their own way through the production, or, machine components that autonomously monitor themselves and arrange inspections as required may still sound like a vision of the future. Nonetheless, in the Collaborative Research Centre 653 ‘Gentelligent Components in their Lifecycle—Utilisation of Inheritable Component Information in Production Engineering’ they will soon be a reality. Transferring characteristics that are similar to those found in nature to industrial production will lead to a paradigm shift in the development and manufacturing of prospective components. This paper presents the techniques and methods that enable this new approach in production engineering by transferring biological principles from the field of genetics into the manufacturing environment.

TL;DR: In this paper, a generic procedure model and a specification technique for the integrative development of mechatronic products and their production systems are presented, which can be used to deal with the stated problem.
Abstract: The increasing penetration of mechanical engineering by information technology enables considerable benefits. The arising new discipline is referred to by the term mechatronics, which expresses the close integration of mechanics, electrics/electronics, control engineering and software engineering. Hence, the design and production of such systems is an interdisciplinary and complex task. An effective and continuous cooperation and communication between developers from different domains during the whole development process is required. Moreover, the multidisciplinary and synergetic effectiveness of mechatronic systems as well as new production technologies cause strong interdependencies between system parts, which are to be produced. As a consequence, the production system determines the product concept. Restrictions by manufacturing technologies have to be considered already during the early stages of the product development. This contribution deals with the stated problem by providing both, a generic procedure model and a specification technique for the integrative development of mechatronic products and their production systems.

TL;DR: The efficiency of diverse cutting edge preparations on the wear behaviour of coated tools, in milling different materials, was investigated in the framework of a cooperative project of the Scientific Committee “Cutting” of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP).
Abstract: The cutting edges of coated tools are commonly treated in separate production steps during tool manufacturing. Various methods can be employed, focusing on the cutting edge strengthening by its rounding or by more complicated geometries including chamfer and optimized tool wedge radius and angles. The efficiency of diverse cutting edge preparations on the wear behaviour of coated tools, in milling different materials, was investigated in the framework of a cooperative project of the Scientific Committee “Cutting” of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). In this activity twenty academic and industrial partners were involved according to a predefined project plan.

TL;DR: In this article, the ASME panel on manufacturing engineering education, industry representatives emphasized preparation for globalization, and possible ways of introducing the subject into an undergraduate curriculum without lengthening the program are suggested.
Abstract: At an ASME panel on manufacturing engineering education, industry representatives emphasized preparation for globalization. The concept has not yet had widespread impact on undergraduate engineering curricula. In this paper the industry updates are summarized, especially as they pertain to undergraduate engineering education for a globalized economy, and synthesized with the literature on the subject. Objectives for manufacturing engineering education are derived and possible ways of introducing the subject into an undergraduate curriculum without lengthening the program are suggested. The findings should be applicable to manufacturing, mechanical, and industrial engineering.
