TL;DR: In this article, a system dynamics model for outsourcing engineering services in a large and complex project organisational structure that is typically associated with design-build (DB) project delivery is analyzed.
Abstract: This study analysed a system dynamics model for outsourcing engineering services in a large and complex project organisational structure that is typically associated with design-build (DB) project delivery. A literature review indicated that most of the reviewed papers implied the project engineering resources were totally insourced or the authors were silent regarding any resources that were outsourced. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis of various model variables was performed, which indicates that the quality and productivity of the outsourced resources as well as the initial number of assigned experienced engineers significantly impacted the amount and timing of engineering work completion. Project outcomes were also impacted by varying the number of initial and changed engineering tasks. The decision to insource/outsource engineering work on DB projects may have significant cost and time impacts, which should be considered by decision makers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed the firm performances, trust, relational norms, interfirm conflict and cooperation as major research variables, and collected the survey responses from the suppliers and subcontractors having experiences with complex projects.
Abstract: Supply chain management for complex project requires continuous integration activities with the suppliers and subcontractors. This study proposes the firm performances, trust, relational norms, interfirm conflict and cooperation as major research variables, and collected the survey responses from the suppliers and subcontractors having experiences with complex projects. The statistical results indicate that the cooperation and conflict influence the firm performances, and that the inter-firm trust have some impact on the level of cooperation and conflict. It was also found that the inter-firm cooperation is influenced by relational norm. But on the contrary to our expectation, the relational norm has no significant impact on the inter-firm conflict. These findings may offer the significant implications leading to successful implementation of collaborative supply chain management in the context of project engineering area.

TL;DR: In this paper, a micro-level conceptualization to absorptive capacity was proposed by investigating individual's capacity to learn from asymmetric engineering project team, by proposing prior experience, learning orientation and need for cognition, as antecedents to abilities to recognize the value of and assimilate competent partner's embedded knowledge.
Abstract: This study proffers a micro-level conceptualization to absorptive capacity, by investigating individual’s capacity to learn from asymmetric engineering project team. Thus, the model proposes prior experience, learning orientation and need for cognition, as antecedents to abilities to recognize the value of and assimilate competent partner’s embedded knowledge. Results of the structural equation modeling, which was conducted through a cross sectional survey of 248 local team members of joint engineering projects in the Nigerian upstream oil industry, empirically validate the model. Specifically, this clarifies the role of individual in knowledge acquisition from joint project team, by demonstrating the effects of individual differences on learning capacity, i.e. ACAP.

TL;DR: The Global Communication Infrastructure (GCI) as mentioned in this paper is a solution and simple working prototypes of a GCI that were developed and validated based on interviews with six representatives from different industries.
Abstract: In order to increase functionality and process performance, today’s and future products need a high degree of tailoring to customer needs. Key drivers are Industry 4.0 and individualized end-customer production capabilities up to lot size one where each product can be easily produced in small amounts and customized. This has to be accomplished under the guardrails of decreasing time-to-market and increasing quality-to-market. Additionally, within large engineering enterprises, the project engineering know-how and the capacities are distributed all over the globe. To fulfill customer requirements, the product knowledge has to be available everywhere at any time. Standardizing custom projects and high-level project configuration guidance via project profile matching are a promising step towards global engineering solutions. This paper will show and describe a first solution and simple working prototypes of a Global Communication Infrastructure (GCI) that were developed and validated based on interviews with six representatives from different industries. Here, the current state of the art regarding knowledge sharing in the different industries as well as the envisioned advantages and potential of the GCI were addressed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a methodology for the research on uncertainty importance risk analysis of time and cost jointly, and the main steps are: (i) defining a covariance of the cost and time of the project activities; (ii) setting up the jointly uncertainty importance measure of cost and Time; (iii) calculating the uncertainty importance and ranking the order of the critical activities by mathematics analytic method.
Abstract: In the engineering project, critical activities may lead the system to huge risk and even failure. Probabilistic risk assessment is closely related to reliability analysis. This paper defines uncertainty importance measure of the project's activities time and analyzes the specific analytical steps of uncertainty importance measure. Time may affect the whole project's risk; meanwhile cost and other factors will also work. So this paper proposes a methodology for the researching on uncertainty importance risk analysis of time and cost jointly. The main steps are: (i) defining a covariance of the cost and time of the project activities; (ii) setting up the jointly uncertainty importance measure of cost and time; (iii) calculating the uncertainty importance and ranking the order of the critical activities by mathematics analytic method. An adapted case is studied to assess the proposed methodology.

TL;DR: The NASA Procedural Requirement (NPR) 7120.5, revision E, was released on August 14, 2012 as mentioned in this paper, and NASA made significant changes to the requirements governing space flight programs and projects, in particular to the project life cycle, project reviews, and the project programmatic and engineering products that document project plans for developing and operating spacecraft and missions.
Abstract: NASA Procedural Requirement (NPR) 7120.5, revision E, was released on August 14, 2012. The new NPR, titled NASA Space Flight Program and Project Management Requirements, communicates NASA's top-level requirements for space flight programs and projects. The requirements are levied on NASA managers and the project engineering and programmatic teams who are developing and operating NASA's space flight missions. NASA made significant additions and changes to the requirements governing space flight programs and projects, in particular to the project life cycle, project reviews, and the project programmatic and engineering products that document project plans for developing and operating spacecraft and missions. These document products are also used to assess project readiness for approval to move into the next life cycle phase. Development of the new products, and of existing products earlier in the project life cycle, will require changes in how NASA's space flight projects are managed and implemented. In particular, projects will need additional funding and/or schedule time during the Formulation Phase of the project life cycle. Other notable changes were made to the NPR, including the addition of a program/project compliance matrix and revision of the waiver process. This paper will describe the key changes to project requirements in the new NPR, how they will impact the development of space flight projects, and how JPL is preparing to implement the new requirements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system dynamics model for outsourcing engineering services in a large and complex project organizational structure that is typically associated with nuclear power plants was analyzed, and the results indicated the decision to outsource/outsource engineering work on nuclear power plant projects may have significant cost and time impacts which should be considered by decision makers.
Abstract: This study analyzed a system dynamics model for outsourcing engineering services in a large and complex project organizational structure that is typically associated with nuclear power plants. A literature review indicated that most of the reviewed papers implied the project engineering resources were totally insourced or the authors were silent regarding any resources that were outsourced. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis of various model parameters was performed. Results of running the SD model indicate that the quality and productivity of the outsourced resources and the initial number of assigned experienced engineers significantly impacted the amount and timing of engineering work completion. An analysis was also performed on the project outcomes by varying the number of initial and changed engineering tasks. The results indicate the decision to insource/outsource engineering work on nuclear power plant projects may have significant cost and time impacts which should be considered by decision makers.Copyright © 2014 by ASME

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors combine the triangular fuzzy number and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to evaluate the risk of collaborative projects, and a collaborative project is introduced as an example to demonstrate the process and validity of the model.
Abstract: The risk of collaborative projects is complex, and generally no project can be used as a reference. So, the method which is used to evaluate the risk of traditional project is not proper for the collaborative project. Combining the triangular fuzzy number and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, a model for evaluating the risk of collaborative project is established in this paper. And a collaborative project is introduced as an example to demonstrate the process and validity of the model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a conceptual model for the creation of an organizational structure that involves active knowledge management through accessible processes and defined responsibilities, which addresses the importance of maintaining knowledge and information through the student organization instead of individual members.
Abstract: Capstone design courses and student chapter design competitions offer students a variety of opportunities to gain project engineering and management experience. Commonly, student design competitions are supported through associated senior capstone design projects, providing the chapter with the resources necessary to produce a quality product. Within the organization, the capstone design students and student chapter members must be able to coordinate efforts to produce, manage, and transfer knowledge from year to year. Through senior matriculation and transient membership, high turnover rates result in the loss of organizational knowledge for future members. In this paper, the authors present a conceptual model for the creation of an organizational structure that involves active knowledge management through accessible processes and defined responsibilities. By analyzing different management structures, a system will be proposed that addresses the importance of maintaining knowledge and information through the student organization instead of individual members. The proposed knowledge management system will encourage regular use by all members, and provide a framework for future project management.
