Abstract: Electrical engineering graduates are faced with a wide variety of technological and managerial decisions. The ability of the engineer to interact with the entire spectrum of individuals involved in marketing a product is a critical component of the overall success of a project. A senior level design course is presented that integrates the numerous phases of project development in order to prepare the student for the industrial environment. The course consisted of designing and flight testing an electronically guided model rocket. An analysis of the rockets anticipated flight path was performed using a FORTRAN program which took into account such factors as stability, center of gravity, center of pressure, and engine thrust. The rocket was flight tested for three successful controlled flights and recoveries. Test flight results proved the design of the rocket to be very stable and respond quickly in flight. >

TL;DR: In the final year of undergraduate degree programs in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of South Australia (UniSA), students accomplish hands-on design projects that account for a quarter of the yearpsilas academic credit load as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In the final year of undergraduate degree programs in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of South Australia (UniSA), students accomplish hands-on design projects that account for a quarter of the yearpsilas academic credit load. The majority of the projects, depending on a year - between 60% and 80% - are industry sponsored, i.e. industry defines the project specification and provides industry supervisor(s) and resources in cash and/or inkind contributions. This gives students an opportunity to develop links with industry and build up their skills, knowledge and industry-relevant practical experience in a specialised engineering field, facilitating their rapid industrial employment. Recently also high school students have been involved in these projects, as reported in the paper. The program has been successfully running for the past 3 years and proved to bring benefits to high school students, university students and also to companies that participate in the program.

TL;DR: This paper reports how new research provides the first empirically based answers to the question of how project management depends on specific knowledge and expertise.
Abstract: Project management is clearly important. But on what specific knowledge and expertise does it depend? In this paper, the author reports how new research provides the first empirically based answers.

TL;DR: In this article, an output utilization mechanism is proposed to explain the cause and effect relationship between a project's outputs and target outcomes and discuss its role in the generation of target outcomes.
Abstract: Benefit realization is becoming a critical performance criterion measure for project success. However, the mechanism through which outputs eventually become outcomes has not yet been identified. This paper proposes that an output utilization mechanism is needed to explain the cause and effect relationship between a project's outputs and target outcomes. The paper describes such a utilization mechanism, and discusses its role in the generation of target outcomes. By expanding on the concept of output utilization, the paper suggests the utilization map as a new tool for project scoping.

TL;DR: A course project is presented which was successfully used to teach software design principles to third year computer engineering students to program a robot to trace a shortest path through a maze.
Abstract: The authors present a course project which was successfully used to teach software design principles to third year computer engineering students. The goal of the project is to program a robot to trace a shortest path through a maze. The students, organized in teams of five, have to follow the classical steps of software development and prepare interface, design and testing documents. Having a project that requires controlling a device to complete a clear task generates enthusiasm in the students and helps them to understand the principles taught in the course.
