TL;DR: In this article, the impact of the use of project management processes on design phase cost performance was analyzed to quantify the potential savings to be obtained by application of each process and regression lines for the meeting and reporting frequency variables against design costs were calculated.
Abstract: Over 270 engineering design projects are analyzed to assess the impact of the use of project management processes on design phase cost performance. Frequency of design team meetings and frequency of reporting of design phase progress were found to reduce design phase costs. Project manager training and the use of a project management based organizational structure were found not to create statistically significant lower design costs. Calculation of regression lines for the meeting and reporting frequency variables against design costs is shown to be a method to quantify the potential savings to be obtained by application of each process.

TL;DR: A number of such models exist; several have received almost no research or industry attention and project managers wishing to implement a functional assessment and estimation programme are unlikely to be aware of the various methods or how they compare.
Abstract: Budgetary constraints are placing increasing pressure on project managers to effectively estimate development effort requirements at the earliest opportunity. With the rising impact of automation on commercial software development, the attention of researchers developing effort estimation models has recently been focused on functional representations of systems, in response to the assertion that development effort is a function of specification content. A number of such models exist; several, however, have received almost no research or industry attention. Project managers wishing to implement a functional assessment and estimation programme are therefore unlikely to be aware of the various methods or how they compare. This paper therefore provides this information, as well as forming a basis for the development and improvement of new methods. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have each selected three of their favorite freshman design projects (a total of fifteen projects) and posted detailed descriptions on the web (www.ua.edu/projects).
Abstract: Many talented engineering students abandon engineering before taking a single engineering course. Herded into large sections of "pre-engineering" mathematics, chemistry and physics courses, many students prove themselves academically but walk away from engineering, disillusioned. Numerous schools have instituted freshmen engineering courses to retain some of these capable but disinterested students in the engineering program. Freshman engineering courses spark students' interest by showing students that engineers communicate, lead and create as well as analyze. One of the most successful ways of showing first-year students the diversity of skills needed to practice engineering is through freshman design projects. The authors have each selected three of their favorite freshmen design projects (a total of fifteen projects) and posted detailed descriptions on the web (www.foundation.ua.edu/projects). This paper provides: a brief description of the freshman programs at each school (the schools are participants in the NSF-sponsored Foundation Coalition); short summaries of each project; and answers to frequently asked questions about freshman design projects.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of customer involvement in effective customization of projects, products, or services is addressed, and relationships between variables such as project effectiveness, user involvement, supplier efficacy for service to the client, and project complexity are studied.
Abstract: This paper addresses the role of customer involvement in effective customization of projects, products, or services. Relationships between variables such as project effectiveness, user involvement, supplier efficacy for service to the client, and project complexity are studied. The conditions necessitating involvement are also explored. The case of voice network customization is examined. A questionnaire is designed to measure the variables of the study. Factor analysis gives two factors of project complexity: project size/cost; and user inexperience. Findings provide evidence that user involvement is positively related to network project effectiveness. Supplier efficacy for service is positively and significantly related to user involvement and project effectiveness. The implication is that suppliers with a service-orientation can motivate user involvement and achieve client satisfaction, In addition, user inexperience is positively related to user involvement showing the importance of learning as a motivator for customer participation. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the different levels of uncertainty of activities for different types of projects, as well as management attitude towards risks, and proposed an enhanced method to improve the critical chain project management method.
Abstract: Project management has been a mature research area using well entrenched methods like PERT/CPM to solve variant problems. The application of theory of constraints in the project management area results in the method of critical chain. Yet the critical chain approach is not perfect now, especially on the estimation of project buffers, This paper analyzes the different levels of uncertainty of activities for different types of projects, as well as management attitude towards risks; and proposes an enhanced method to improve the critical chain project management method.
