TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the causes of delay in construction projects in oil and gas processing facilities in Oman and serves as a case study for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Abstract: Several studies investigating the causes of delay in projects in the construction industry have been conducted worldwide. This study investigates the causes of delay in construction projects in oil and gas processing facilities in Oman and serves as a case study for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Using a questionnaire, data were collected from 59 project managers employed in different organizations in the oil and gas industry in Oman. The survey results showed a high degree of agreement among the perceptions of project stakeholders, clients, contractors, and consultants on the causes of project delay, and there is no evidence to suggest that the causes of project delay differ significantly according to organization size or organizational ownership. Moreover, seven factors were identified as the major causes of project delay. Although six of these identified elements are general factors that can account for delay in any project in any industry, one of them—poor interaction with vendors in the engineering and procurement stages—is found to be unique to construction projects in the oil and gas industry. The findings of this study could be of value to organizations that are planning to conduct construction projects for oil and gas processing facilities in Oman and other nations with similar environments, such as the GCC countries.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a framework that puts the stakeholders at the forefront of achieving sustainability in the social context, and argue that the social sustainability outcomes in construction are best achieved by taking into account the satisfactions of the stakeholders.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to propose a framework that puts the stakeholders at the forefront of achieving sustainability in the social context. This research, thus, argues that the social sustainability outcomes in construction are best achieved by taking into account the satisfactions of the stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach – Based on sustainability and equity theories, a dynamic assessment model has been developed to evaluate the contributions of projects in a social context. Multiple stakeholders and their differing interests associated with the construction projects have been integrated using social network analysis. The mapping of the relationships between the project stakeholders, with respect to their relative stakes and seven social core functions, have been integrated in the assessment model. Findings – The findings of this research suggest that the degree of satisfying the needs of diverse stakeholders is highly significant in achieving social sustainability performance of projects. Abstract: This paper presents a systematic and generic framework reference for the practice of stakeholder management in the construction industry. It contains findings from empirical studies, comprising six interviews, a pilot study, a questionnaire survey in Hong Kong, and 15 interviews in Australia. Six activity groups (i.e., precondition, project data identification, stakeholder estimation, decision making, action and evaluation, and sustainable support) and a total of 18 activities within these groups and their interrelations formulate the main body of the framework. The proposed framework was validated by five real-life projects, the results of which confirm the applicability of the proposed framework. This study serves as a reference for project-management teams to systematically manage stakeholders in construction projects.

TL;DR: A hypothetical case study, involving adolescent use of harmful legal products, illustrates the process of applying stakeholder theory to strategic decision making.
Abstract: Stakeholder theory may help health promoters to make changes at the organizational and policy level to promote health. A stakeholder is any individual, group, or organization that can influence an organization. The organization that is the focus for influence attempts is called the focal organization. The more salient a stakeholder is and the more central in the network, the stronger the influence. As stakeholders, health promoters may use communicative, compromise, deinstitutionalization, or coercive methods through an ally or a coalition. A hypothetical case study, involving adolescent use of harmful legal products, illustrates the process of applying stakeholder theory to strategic decision making.

TL;DR: In this article, a structured questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 118 CEOs and project managers to provide a clear definition of critical success factors in IT projects in Jordan, and explore the differences in the attitudes of project managers and CEO towards such factors.
Abstract: Current modern life styles, huge amount of the data available and the increased complexity of software products made IT projects extremely challenging projects. In Jordan, IT projects play a significant role in the country's economy. Unfortunately, high percentages of IT projects are considered to be failed or challenging projects. To avoid project failure, success factors must be maintained and enhanced. This study aims to provide a clear definition of critical success factors in IT projects in Jordan, and to explore the differences in the attitudes of project managers and CEO towards such factors.A structured questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 118 CEOs and project managers. A total number of 90 completely filled questionnaires were returned. A quantitative data analysis has been conducted for the 18 success factors using SPSS software and Excel program. The study revealed that the majority of IT companies in Jordan have a success rate of 75%. Moreover the study implied that project managers are considered to be the most responsible part for project success. In these organizations, the usage of web applications and Email dominated the list of information transfer methods. According to t-test paired result, there is a clear agreement between the two groups (CEOs and Project Managers) on the critical success factors' importance in IT projects in the Jordanian organization. The study recommends highly giving attention to technical concerns in projects and product quality, highly focusing on project management concepts and effective regulations. Furthermore, effective communication between all project stakeholders and minimal customization of the systems introduced are highly recommended by the study. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify the impact of relational norms on project success in different project governance contexts and show that the relationship between relational norms and project success is moderated by the strictness of project governance, especially the level of flexibility left to the project manager.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of relational norms on project success in different project governance contexts. Design/methodology/approach – A worldwide web-based questionnaire yielded 200 responses. Results from regression analyses supported the hypothesis that relational norms impact project success. Hierarchical regression analyses showed the moderating effect of governance and control on the relationship between relational norms and project success. Findings – Relational norms in the buyer-supplier relationship are positively associated with project success. This relationship is moderated by the strictness of project governance, especially the level of flexibility left to the project manager. Lower levels of managerial flexibility are detrimental to project success in cases of weak relational norms and supportive of project success in cases of high relational norms. Research limitations/implications – Academic implications stem from the indication that control has a low...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a method for identifying and evaluating the risks which impact on new technology adoption and two constructs were generated for improving implementation rates, and investigated whether the constructs can be integrated to develop a practical tool for use by project stakeholders desirous to generate innovation.
Abstract: Technological advancement and demand for economic growth are driving product innovation in the construction industry. However there is concern that the industry lacks the mechanisms to effectively implement new products. Recent studies have developed a method for identifying and evaluating the risks which impact on new technology adoption and two constructs were generated for improving implementation rates. The aim is to investigate whether the constructs can be integrated to develop a practical tool for use by project stakeholders desirous to generate innovation. Process modelling, statistical analysis and failure mode and effect analysis are used to align the constructs into a test model (TM). Three rounds of Delphi gain a consensus on the TM outputs and the results produce the innovation management model (IMM). The IMM is a simple process flowchart which establishes the prioritized sequence of stakeholder activities required to implement a new technology at key stages in the project process. The IMM ha...

TL;DR: In this article, a survey was conducted amongst a non-probability sample of 48 project team members from amongst a population of 257, comprising project managers, business analysts and IT staff of a medium sized fleet management organisation that is in the process of implementing an entirely new enterprise resource planning system.
Abstract: Orientation: Understanding the relationship between a project sponsor’s servant leadership traits and employee commitment, trust and innovative behaviour. Research purpose: This study aimed to understand the relationship, if any, between a project sponsor’s servant leadership traits of altruistic calling, emotional healing, wisdom, persuasive mapping and organisational stewardship and a project team’s empowerment, commitment, trust and innovative behaviour. Motivation of the study: Most project leadership studies focus on understanding the role and power position of the project manager, with very little research being dedicated to understanding the effect the leadership style has on the project team and project success. Research approach: A survey was conducted amongst a non-probability sample of 48 project team members from amongst a population of 257, comprising project managers, business analysts and IT staff of a medium sized fleet management organisation that is in the process of implementing an entirely new enterprise resource planning system. Main findings: Through inferential statistical analysis, using structural equation modelling and path analysis, it was determined that persuasive mapping has the strongest impact on employee innovative behaviour, followed by employee commitment and trust via the mediator of employee perceived empowerment. Wisdom and organisational stewardship had a negative impact on employee perceived empowerment. Practical/managerial implications: Project sponsors need to exhibit persuasive mapping, altruistic calling and emotional healing traits due to the significant influence that these have on employee innovative behaviour, commitment and trust, albeit through their perceived empowerment. Contribution/value-add: This study contributes to knowledge of leadership, more especially servant leadership and its significance in project management, which knowledge may contribute to project success

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how the communicative practices of project managers create a dialogue with stakeholders that ultimately impacts the content, direction and outcome of a project and find that project managers do not subscribe to the belief that communication is part of a constitutive process.
Abstract: Purpose – Project communication is overwhelmingly viewed as the proper and timely delivery of pertinent project information. The view of communication in this way misses the constitutive nature of communication. Communication is more than message exchange but a way that project managers generate the grounds for a project. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the communicative practices of project managers creates a dialogue with stakeholders that ultimately impacts the content, direction and outcome of a project. Design/methodology/approach – Semi-structured interviews were performed with project managers from the Project Management Office of a large international bank. The project managers were responsible for their own projects of varying size with scopes that included everything from marketing initiatives to heavily oriented technology projects. Findings – Overall, the project managers interviewed for the current project do not subscribe to the belief that communication is part of a constitutive...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the degrees to which leadership styles affect project outcome and specific leadership styles are appropriate in specific types of situations, based on a questionnaire survey of views of 162 project managers employed by the largest public infrastructure client in Sweden.
Abstract: Successful completion of a construction project requires the ability to coordinate activities of numerous individuals participating in tasks that often have high levels of complexity and uncertainty. Thus, the project manager plays crucial roles, often setting the ground rules and fostering a collective approach that strongly influence project performance. However, there are uncertainties regarding various aspects of project managers’ influence, particularly related to their leadership style. Thus, the research reported in this paper explores the degrees to which leadership styles affect project outcome and specific leadership styles are appropriate in specific types of situations. The analysis is based on a questionnaire survey of views of 162 project managers employed by the largest public infrastructure client in Sweden. The results indicate that project performance (in terms of cost, time, and quality) is affected by leadership, suggesting that the project manager’s leadership style is a signi...

TL;DR: A conceptual framework for understanding stakeholder management (ShM) in the clinical research environment is introduced and practical suggestions for fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement are offered.
Abstract: This review introduces a conceptual framework for understanding stakeholder management in the clinical and community-based research environment. In recent years, an evolution in practice has occurred in which many applicants for public and non-governmental funding of public health research in hospital settings. Community health research projects are inherently complex, have sought to involve patients and other stakeholders in the center of the research process. Substantial evidence has now been provided that stakeholder involvement is essential for management effectiveness in clinical research. Feedback from stakeholders has critical value for research managers inasmuch as it alerts them to the social, environmental and ethical implications of research activities. Additionally those who are directly affected by program development and clinical research, the patients, their families, and others, almost universally have a strong motivation to be involved in the planning and execution of new program changes. The current overview introduces a conceptual framework for stakeholder management in the clinical research environment and offers practical suggestions for fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement. The fifth edition of PMBOK® of the Project Management Institute (PMI), has served as basis for many of the suggested guidelines that are put forward in this article.

TL;DR: This project aims to understand how interventions to change antimicrobial prescribing behaviours of doctors in training produce their effects using the realist review approach, a form of theory-driven interpretive systematic review approach often used to make sense of complex interventions.
Abstract: Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance has been described as a global crisis-more prudent prescribing is part of the solution. Behaviour change interventions are needed to improve prescribing practice. Presently, the literature documents that context impacts on prescribing decisions, yet insufficient evidence exists to enable researchers and policymakers to determine how local tailoring should take place. Doctors in training are an important group to study, being numerically the largest group of prescribers in UK hospitals. Unfortunately very few interventions specifically targeted this group. Methods and analysis: Our project aims to understand how interventions to change antimicrobial prescribing behaviours of doctors in training produce their effects. We will recruit a project stakeholder group to advise us throughout. We will synthesise the literature using the realist review approach-a form of theory-driven interpretive systematic review approach often used to make sense of complex interventions. Interventions to improve antimicrobial prescribing behaviours are complex-they are context dependent, have long implementation chains, multiple non-linear interactions, emergence and depend on human agency. Our review will iteratively progress through 5 steps: step 1-Locate existing theories; step 2-Search for evidence; step 3-Article selection; step 4-Extracting and organising data; and step 5-Synthesising the evidence and drawing conclusions. Data analysis will use a realist logic of analysis to describe and explain what works, for whom, in what circumstances, in what respects, how and why to improve antimicrobial prescribing behaviour of doctors in training. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval was not required for our review. Our dissemination strategy will be participatory and involve input from our stakeholder group. Tailored project outputs will be targeted at 3 audiences: (1) doctors in training; (2) clinical supervisors/trainers and medical educators; and (3) policy, decision makers, regulators and royal societies.

TL;DR: In this article, a survey towards the internal project stakeholder in an univerity with response rate 48% was carried out to collect the raw data for Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis.
Abstract: In this research, adoption of the DeLone and McLean (D&M) information system (IS) success model and its adaptation with the project success theories were used to explore state of IS project success and to examine factors which affect its success. A survey towards the internal project stakeholder in an univerity with response rate 48% was carried out to collect the raw data for Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis. Majority of the participants (80.7%) stated that level of the project success is more than 50% where information quality, system quality, service quality, system use, and user satisfaction substantially explain 64.5% of variance in the success variable. The three quality factors together explain 43.2% of the variance of system use and 70.4% of the variance of user satisfaction. Although, a number of the findings were consistent with the prior studies, these findings also presented inconsistencies especially related to aspects of information quality and system use. Accordingly, researchers and practitioners will be stand to benefit from the information provided in this study and it is hoped that future research will build upon the findings reported herein as efforts are made to attain the IS project success especially in the sampled institution.
