TL;DR: Project management requires deliberate planning and action to create the conditions for success and put in place the strategy, leadership, goals, process, skills, systems, issue resolution, and structure to direct and exploit the dynamic nature of project work as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: There are several conditions essential for project success that apply to all projects, whether related to top‐level strategic business issues or operational ones: executives must make a compelling business case for project management; make it practical, relevant, and beneficial from day one; make systems and procedures project management‐friendly; make project management a win for team members and managers; make project management an ongoing learning experience, and; make success public. Project management requires deliberate planning and action to create the conditions for success and put in place the strategy, leadership, goals, process, skills, systems, issue resolution, and structure to direct and exploit the dynamic nature of project work. If work today is done through projects, as is surely the case, then working smarter on projects will enable an organization to meet, head‐on, whatever strategic and operational challenges may come its way.

TL;DR: In this paper, a framework to provide a logical structure for the a priori assessment of a particular technology with regard to sustainability concepts, performance, and relevancy to a project's construction process and operation is introduced.
Abstract: A recently developed framework to provide a logical structure for the a priori assessment of a particular technology with regard to sustainability concepts, performance, and relevancy to a project's construction process and operation is introduced. The framework is designed to assist project stakeholders and policy-makers in systematically identifying and evaluating the implications and relative merits of a range of alternative sustainable technologies. Building professionals were consulted throughout the development of the framework: to test the completeness of the framework; to capture the value systems of various industry participants in order to reflect them in the framework; and to gather information on the advantages and disadvantages of the green roof technology. The framework is applied to the example of the green roof technology, and the order-of-magnitude estimates are developed for performance measures identified as important from the perspective of industry professionals. The technology is eva...

TL;DR: The project quarterback rating (PQR) as mentioned in this paper combines key performance metrics of a project into a single number to provide a basis for quantifying project success, including customer relations, schedule and budget compliance, quality and safety statistics, financial metrics, and communication among the different project stakeholders.
Abstract: This paper presents the development, validation, and implementation of an innovative comprehensive project performance metric specifically developed for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects. The project quarterback rating (PQR) combines key performance metrics of a project into a single number to provide a basis for quantifying project success. The combined performance areas include customer relations, schedule and budget compliance, quality and safety statistics, financial metrics, and communication among the different project stakeholders. The existing literature is analyzed to identify key performance metrics. A data-collection instrument is developed and then used to gather quantitative performance data from recently completed projects. Data are collected from industry professionals across the United States, and multivariate data analysis techniques are used to validate the model. PQR can compare the overall performance for different AEC projects, in addition to the perfo...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on top management support for projects executed in the software sector and compared the effectiveness of these processes with the actual type of support provided by organisations, and calculated their effectiveness according to their relative impact on project success.
Abstract: Purpose – Top management support is considered to be an area that has high impact on project success. However, previous studies have also stated that effective top management support practices may vary across industries. This paper focuses on top management support for projects executed in the software sector. The objective of this study is to identify those top management support processes that have the greatest impact on software development project success and to compare these critical processes with the actual type of support provided by organisations.Design/methodology/approach – About 17 top management support processes have been identified from the literature. Their effectiveness has been calculated according to their relative impact on project success. Data has been collected from 213 software development project managers and their supervisors in Japan, Israel and New Zealand. For each country, the impact of top management support processes on project success has been analysed to identify critical...
