TL;DR: In this article, the aerodynamic effect of synthetic jets on the control authority needed to maneuver a projectile at low subsonic speeds has been investigated using the time-accurate Navier-Stokes computational technique.
Abstract: : This report describes a computational study undertaken to consider the aerodynamic effect of synthetic jets as a means to provide the control authority needed to maneuver a projectile at low subsonic speeds. The time-accurate Navier-Stokes computational technique has been used to obtain numerical solutions for the unsteady jet interaction flow field for a projectile at a subsonic speed, Mach = 0.11, and several angles of attack from O deg to 4 deg. Qualitative flow field features show the interaction of the time dependent jet with the free stream flow. Numerical results show the effect of the jet on the flow field, surface pressures and aerodynamic coefficients. Unsteady numerical results have been obtained for a two-dimensional jet flow and compared with experimental data for validation. The same unsteady jet modeling technique has been applied to a subsonic projectile. These numerical results are being assessed to determine if synthetic jets can be used to provide the control authority needed for maneuvering munitions to hit the targets with precision.

TL;DR: In this paper, a probabilistic model was developed to analyze the reliability of metallic targets impacted by cylindrical metallic projectiles (resulting from industrial facilities explosion, for instance), and the theoretical penetration depth into the target was compared with experimental data collected from existing references.
Abstract: In this paper, the authors develop a probabilistic model in order to analyse the reliability of metallic targets impacted by cylindrical metallic projectiles (resulting from industrial facilities explosion, for instance). The random variables are the projectiles features (mass, velocity at impact, incidence angle between the projectile and the target plane, the diameter) and the target properties (ultimate strength and strain of the constitutive material as well as the target thickness). A simplified mechanical model is proposed. in the case of cylindrical projectiles and planar targets. It relies on the hypothesis of plastic behaviour of the target constitutive material whereas it assumes that the projectile behaves as a rigid body. The theoretical penetration depth into the target is compared with experimental data collected from existing references.

TL;DR: In this paper, a characteristic of a fired projectile is detected using an optical system and the trajectory of the projectile's travel path in relation to a vehicle is determined, if the determined travel path is within a predetermined distance from the vehicle, it is determined that the projectile is hostile towards the vehicle and a warning is output.
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer program products for identifying hostile fire. A characteristic of a fired projectile is detected using an optical system and the projectile's travel path in relation to a vehicle is determined. If the determined travel path of the projectile is within a predetermined distance from the vehicle, it is determined that the projectile is hostile towards the vehicle and a warning is output.
