Abstract: A method of providing a high-explosive projectile with desired areas of fragmentation includes the following steps: securing a steel plate component in a circumferentially extending recess in the outer surface of a projectile body; directing an energy beam to outer surface portions of the steel plate component; heating, by the energy beam, narrow zones to a temperature above the melting temperature of the steel plate component to a predetermined depth thereof; and cooling the heated zones for effecting structural metallurgical changes in the steel plate component for obtaining the desired areas of fragmentation.

Abstract: An automatic target shooting system for determining projectile location relative to a target, calculating a score based upon the location and displaying a replica of the target with an indication of the location of the projectile relative to the target and the score. A target support structure defines a target area with criss-crossing X-Y-type coordinate light beams extending thereacross between light emitter devices and light receiving devices which generate output signals indicative of the location of a projectile during passage through the target area. The output signals are utilized by a computer device to identify the location of the projectile relative to the target and score the shot in accordance with the location. A replica of the target is displayed on a CRT screen with an indication of the location of the shot thereon and the score for the shot.

Abstract: Projectile impact generates severe fragmentation in ceramics which propagates at high velocities and precedes the penetration of the projectile. The high-speed photographic technique of the Edge-On Impact (EOI) has been developed at the Ernst-Mach-Institute (EMI) in order to visualize dynamic fracture in brittle materials. In a typical EOI test the projectile hits one edge of a specimen and fracture propagation is observed during the first 20 us after impact by means of a Cranz-Schardin highspeed camera. EOI tests allow a characterization of different ceramics by the macroscopic fracture patterns, single crack velocities, and crack front velocities (damage velocities). The phenomenology of damage propagation in several ceramics and a ceramic-metal composite is discussed. The EOI technique is useful for the evaluation of damage models for brittle materials because it enables a direct comparison of model predictions to experimental data obtained during the impact process.

Abstract: A frangible projectile with a specific gravity similar to a lead projectile. The projectile comprises 34-94%, by weight, binder. The binder comprises poly ether block amide resin. The projectile further comprises 6-66%, by weight, ballast. The ballast comprises at least one member selected from a group consisting of tungsten, tungsten carbide, molybdenum, tantalum, ferro-tungsten, copper, bismuth, iron, steel, brass, aluminum bronze, beryllium copper, tin, aluminum, titanium, zinc, nickel silver alloy, cupronickel and nickel. The projectile can be prepared with a particularly preferred specific gravity of 5-14 and more preferably 11-11.5.

TL;DR: In this paper, a smoothed particle hydrodynamics method was used to simulate the hypervelocity impact of a spherical projectile with a thin plate and comparison with experimental data, which showed that in case of the cube sharp edge impact, a debris cloud of a higher density, and therefore most dangerous for the considered systems of two plates, is formed.
