TL;DR: In this paper, a composite turbo-fan/turbo-shaft gas turbine engine system is provided wherein the fan is driven through a variable geometry torque coverter whose input is driven by the turbine power shaft supplied through a reduction gear.
Abstract: A composite turbo-fan/turbo-shaft gas turbine engine system is provided wherein the fan is driven through a variable geometry torque coverter whose input is driven by the turbine power shaft supplied through a reduction gear. Actuation of the variable geometry of the torque converter provides a wide variety of operating modes including all power to the power output shaft and combinations in between.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a type of internal combustion engines which function in accordance with the principle and in the manner commonly known as "jet propulsion" in general to prime movers of the fluid reaction type.
Abstract: This invention relates in general to prime movers of the fluid reaction type and more particularly to the type of internal combustion engines which function in accordance with the principle and in the manner commonly known as "jet propulsion." The features of this invention may have numerous...

TL;DR: In this article, a preliminary investigation of the dynamics of a generic vehicle configuration similar to the X-30 with Scramjet propulsion is presented, with special attention to the interactions between the airframe, engine, and structural dynamics.
Abstract: The dynamic characteristics of hypersonic vehicles are reviewed, with special attention to the interactions between the airframe, engine, and structural dynamics. Based on a preliminary investigation of the dynamics of a generic vehicle configuration similar to the X-30 with Scramjet propulsion, an assessment of these interactions is presented. The control effectors include aerodynamic pitch-control surfaces, as well as engine fuel flow and diffuser area ratio. The study configuration is statically instable in pitch, and exhibits strong airframe/engine/elastic coupling in the attitude dynamics and engine responses. This strong coupling will require a highly integrated airframe-engine control system, and the performance of the attitude control system will be contingent upon the ability to adequately deal with the structural aeroelastic response and engine dynamics.

TL;DR: In this article, a KVLCC2M hull was equipped with a set of wingsail inspired from those used in the 34th America's Cup, and the combined thrust due to the propeller and the wingsails required to achieve a given cruising speed was computed by solving the equations of motion.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of compact thrusters, inspired by the natural locomotion of jellyfish and squid, is developed for propulsion and maneuvering of underwater vehicles, which can be placed completely inside a vehicle hull, thus providing the desired maneuvering capability without sacrificing efficient cruising due to sleek hydrodynamic shape.
Abstract: A series of compact thrusters, inspired by the natural locomotion of jellyfish and squid, is developed for propulsion and maneuvering of underwater vehicles. These thrusters generate propulsive forces by successively ingesting and expelling jets of water in a controlled manner at high frequencies. In order to achieve higher thrust levels, the parameters controlling the performance of the thrusters are reviewed and investigated. Because the thrusters are compact, they can be placed completely inside a vehicle hull, thus providing the desired maneuvering capability without sacrificing efficient cruising due to sleek hydrodynamic shape. The system design of CephaloBot, a prototype hybrid vehicle utilizing these thrusters, is presented, as well. A custom-developed embedded and compact system is also designed for the CephaloBot. A base set of navigational sensors, an acoustic system for localization and underwater communication, Xbee Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver for communication above water, and a LabVIEW programmed processing board are all included as key features of the system.
