TL;DR: It is conceivable that the proteins interact directly with specific sequences of nucleotides in the groove of doublestranded DNA.
Abstract: THE regulation of gene activity seems to depend, at least partially, on specific interactions between DNA and protein. In particular, regulation of protein synthesis in bacteria is probably determined by interaction between operator genes and proteins acting as repressors1. It is conceivable that the proteins interact directly with specific sequences of nucleotides in the groove of doublestranded DNA2.
