TL;DR: In this article, a load balancer that distributes packets across different transmission paths according to transmission path quality is introduced, along with a DNS proxy server that transparently creates a virtual private network in response to a domain name inquiry.
Abstract: A plurality of computer nodes communicate using seemingly random Internet Protocol source and destination addresses. Data packets matching criteria defined by a moving window of valid addresses are accepted for further processing, while those that do not meet the criteria are quickly rejected. Improvements to the basic design include (1) a load balancer that distributes packets across different transmission paths according to transmission path quality; (2) a DNS proxy server that transparently creates a virtual private network in response to a domain name inquiry; (3) a large-to-small link bandwidth management feature that prevents denial-of-service attacks at system chokepoints; (4) a traffic limiter that regulates incoming packets by limiting the rate at which a transmitter can be synchronized with a receiver; and (5) a signaling synchronizer that allows a large number of nodes to communicate with a central node by partitioning the communication function between two separate entities.

TL;DR: In this paper, a computer system for automatic replacement of direct advertisements in scarce media includes an advertising server for selecting a direct advertisement based on certain criteria, and transaction results of the direct advertisement placement are reported back to the advertising server, and an associated accounting system.
Abstract: A computer system for automatic replacement of direct advertisements in scarce media includes an advertising server for selecting a direct advertisement based on certain criteria. Transaction results of the direct advertisement placement are reported back to the advertising server, and an associated accounting system. In one embodiment, the direct advertiser's server reports transactions back to the advertising server by email. In a second embodiment, a direct proxy server brokers the user's session (or interaction) with the direct advertiser's server, including transaction processing and the direct proxy server reports the results of transactions back to the advertising server and its associated accounting system. A direct proxy provides an independent audit of transactions at a remote direct advertiser's web site. The feedback of the results of direct advertisement transactions provides an efficient utilization of direct advertising space by way of an automated computer system with a predictive model for selection and distribution of direct advertising.

TL;DR: This paper describes an architecture, Onion Routing, that limits a network's vulnerability to traffic analysis and provides real-time, bi-directional, anonymous communication for any protocol that can be adapted to use a proxy service.
Abstract: This paper describes an architecture, Onion Routing, that limits a network's vulnerability to traffic analysis. The architecture provides anonymous socket connections by means of proxy servers. It provides real-time, bi-directional, anonymous communication for any protocol that can be adapted to use a proxy service. Specifically, the architecture provides for bi-directional communication even though no-one but the initiator's proxy server knows anything but previous and next hops in the communication chain. This implies that neither the respondent nor his proxy server nor any external observer need know the identity of the initiator or his proxy server. A prototype of Onion Routing has been implemented. This prototype works with HTTP (World Wide Web) proxies. In addition, an analogous proxy for TELNET has been implemented. roxies for FTP and SMTP are under development.

TL;DR: In this article, a system is provided wherein relatively low-end computers such as portable, battery-powered computers ordinarily incapable of Internet browsing functions may be used to browse the Internet.
Abstract: A system is provided wherein relatively low-end computers, such as portable, battery-powered computers ordinarily incapable of Internet browsing functions may be used to browse the Internet. The enhanced computing ability for such portables is provided by a unique arrangement having a Proxy-Server with adequate computing power for all World Wide Web (WWW) browsing and downloading functions, and further capable of transposing downloaded files to alternative, low-information-density form suitable for rapid processing and display by connected portable and other low-end computers. In some embodiments the data link from the connected low-end units is a TCP/IP pipe, supporting TCP/IP protocol, but not the many sophisticated extensions usually associated with TCP/IP. In embodiments wherein battery-powered units are used, connected to the Proxy-Server, battery life is exhibited far beyond what would be expected for a battery-powered computer with computing power for browsing the Internet directly.

TL;DR: This work assesses the potential of proxy servers to cache documents retrieved with the HTTP protocol, and finds that a proxy server really functions as a second level cache, and its hit rate may tend to decline with time after initial loading given a more or less constant set of users.
Abstract: As the number of World-Wide Web users grow, so does the number of connections made to servers. This increases both network load and server load. Caching can reduce both loads by migrating copies of server files closer to the clients that use those files. Caching can either be done at a client or in the network (by a proxy server or gateway). We assess the potential of proxy servers to cache documents retrieved with the HTTP protocol. We monitored traffic corresponding to three types of educational workloads over a one semester period, and used this as input to a cache simulation. Our main findings are (1) that with our workloads a proxy has a 30-50% maximum possible hit rate no matter how it is designed; (2) that when the cache is full and a document is replaced, least recently used (LRU) is a poor policy, but simple variations can dramatically improve hit rate and reduce cache size; (3) that a proxy server really functions as a second level cache, and its hit rate may tend to decline with time after initial loading given a more or less constant set of users; and (4) that certain tuning configuration parameters for a cache may have little benefit.
