TL;DR: During drug development effects on blood cells, metabolism or function of heart and circulation are routinely examined, and in case there is evidence of influence on such systems, examinations in clinical pharmacology are done.
Abstract: During drug development effects on blood cells, metabolism or function of heart and circulation are routinely examined. In case there is evidence of influence on such systems, examinations in clinical pharmacology are done. For the organ central nervous system the same rules should be followed, independently whether a substance is primarily a psychotropic drug or developed for other indications. Besides pharmacopsychological procedures pharmacoelectroencephalography is the most sensitive method to describe drug induced changes on brain function of humans. In event related research (e.g. evoked potentials) it is easier to form hypotheses for the mechanism of reaction after stimulation. About the validity of spontaneous cortical activity, like scalp recorded EEG we have little knowledge. However, a single signal of the spontaneous activity is analyzed into several components, each of which can be influenced differently by various drugs. Important areas of pharmacoelectroencephalography are: 1) Determination of CNS effects on a functional level; judgement whether a pharmacon has a potential for influencing CNS function in comparison to placebo. 2) Characterization of CNS-effects; determination of vigilance changes and classification of the profile in comparison to the EEG-effects of standards. 3) Determination of dose/efficacy and time/efficacy relations; description of kinetic data based on an effect-parameter, in contrast to blood levels; comparison of different galenic formulations; determination of onset and duration of effects; etc. 4) Determination of sleep-wake rhythms; measurement of influence on sleep/waking behaviour in the sleep laboratory or under vigilance controlled conditions during daytime.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

TL;DR: No major change was detected in the number of prescriptions for psychotropic drugs or the consultation rates during the years that counselling was available and three years after counselling more than three-quarters of patients who had been counselled were receiving no medical attention for psychiatric problems.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect on consultation rates and psychotropic drug prescribing of employing a counsellor in a general practice. No major change was detected in the number of prescriptions for psychotropic drugs or the consultation rates during the years that counselling was available. An increase in the number of psychotropic drug prescriptions in the year after counselling was accounted for by a very small number of patients. Three years after counselling more than three-quarters of the patients who had been counselled were receiving no medical attention for psychiatric problems. This may either reflect the effect of counselling over a longer period or the natural history of the problems.

TL;DR: An automated high-resolution gas chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of low levels of the antidepressant psychotropic drug Nomifensine in human plasma as discussed by the authors, which is accurate, specific and precise, and capable of measuring plasma concentrations down to a level of 2 ng/ml.

TL;DR: White females were the most likely to have used a psychotrope at some time in their lives although these medications were more likely to be taken episodically by this group than by blacks, the elderly and the poor, who tended to be frequent users once the drug was prescribed.
Abstract: This paper presents data on the prevelance of drug use among 1633 randomly selected respondents living in the southeastern United States. The general use of a wide variety of drugs including vitamins, birth control pills, and medications prescribed for specific physical illnesses are reported with a specific focus on the prevalence and frequency of alcohol and psychotropic drug usage. The analysis presents the findings controlled for race, sex, age, and socioeconomic factors. It was found that 53.3% of the sample were taking some kind of drug at the time of interview. Of the total sample, 26.6% were taking non-prescription drugs, 28.8% were using drugs prescribed for some specific somatic illness, 10.6% were taking drugs usually classified as psychotropic, and 14.0% reported taking drugs which could not be positively identified (and therefore were labelled undifferentiated). Many of these persons were multiple users. Also, approximately two-thirds of the sample indicated they had drunk alcohol at some time...

TL;DR: In schizophrenic patients, the course of lipid peroxidation was investigated as indicated by pentane contents in the expired air (gas chromatography) during a course of psychotropic drug therapy and the LP decreased in a "leap-like" manner with episodes far exceeding the control levels.
Abstract: In schizophrenic patients, the course of lipid peroxidation (LP) was investigated as indicated by pentane contents in the expired air (gas chromatography) during a course of psychotropic drug therapy. In 80% of the patients LP was activated before the therapy and reduced in its course with the levels in remission comparable to those characteristic of healthy controls. The LP decreased in a "leap-like" manner with episodes far exceeding the control levels. These leaps' rate and the baseline LP increase before therapy positively correlated with severity of the signs of the disease, its duration, and pre-existing level of negative disorders.
