TL;DR: In this paper, an annular spring is located in the cylindrical recess in such a manner as to exert a radial pressure against the shaft, thereby increasing the frictional resistance against axial displacement of the wheels relatively to the shaft.
Abstract: A construction toy including a splined shaft and a wheel element nonrotatably fitting thereon and retained by a spring ring which grips the shaft. A hub element is detachably secured to the wheel, with the spring occupying a recess between wheel and hub elements to limit their movement on the shaft. A. The Problem Small children playing with mechanical toy building sets often have difficulties in securing pinions, pulleys, discs and similar wheel elements on shafts when building vehicles or other mechanical devices. Fastening such wheel elements on the shafts generally requires the use of tools or accessories which are difficult to handle for small children. B. The Solution Two essential features are required for solving this problem, and the invention consists in the combination of these features: A. To provide a shaft having a noncircular cross section and wheel elements having a complementary hole, so as to enable the child to mount the wheels on the shaft by pushing them thereon from one end, thereby fixing the wheels on the shaft so as to prevent relative rotational movement. B. To provide a frictional fit between the shaft and the wheels so that axial displacement can only be effected by overcoming the friction therebetween. To this end a cylindrical recess is provided in the wheel element surrounding the central hole therein and an annular spring is located in the cylindrical recess in such a manner as to exert a radial pressure against the shaft, thereby increasing the frictional resistance against axial displacement of the wheels relatively to the shaft. The functioning of this spring is automatic and requires no skill or attention on the part of the user. C. The shaft may be tapered at one end, so as to facilitate the mounting of the wheels. D. The width of the cylindrical recess or cavity within the wheel is greater than the thickness of the spring to prevent the spring from being jammed within the cylindrical recess. E. The cylindrical cavity or recess is closed so as to totally enclose the annular spring by means of a hub element assembled with the side of the wheel.

TL;DR: A VARIABLE-RATIO BELT DRIVE for MINI BIKES and the like as mentioned in this paper is a V-BELT-based approach that is responsible for both engine speed and torque control.
Abstract: A VARIABLE-RATIO BELT DRIVE FOR MINI BIKES AND THE LIKE, RESPONSIVE TO BOTH ENGINE SPEED AND DRIVE TORQUE. A NORMALLY-OPEN, VARIABLE-WIDTH DRIVER PULLEY RESPONSIVE TO ENGINE SPEED IS CONNECTED BY A V-BELT TO A NORMALLYCLOSED VARIABLE-WIDTH DRIVEN PULLEY WHICH INITIALLY GIVES A HIGH-REDUCTION DRIVE RATIO, E.G., 3:1. ONE FLANGE OF THE DRIVEN PULLEY IS MOVABLE AND URGED TOWARD THE FIXED FLANGE BY LOW-ANGLE CAMS AND A TORSION SPRING. A MOVABLE FLANGE OF THE DRIVER PULLEY IS URGED TOWARD THE FIXED FLANGE THEREOF BY WEDGE WEIGHTS ACTING BETWEEN THE MOVABLE FLANGE AND A REACTION CONE, SO THAT INCREASED SPEED CLOSES THE DRIVER PULLEY AND EXERTS BELT TENSION TO OPEN THE DRIVEN PULLEY, WHICH LOWERS THE DRIVE RATIO. HIGH TORQUE CAUSES THE CAMS TO CLOSE THE DRIVEN PULLEY AND OVERCOME THE SPEED-RESPONSE CONTROL, HENCE TO INCREASE THE DRIVE RATIO TO HANDLE THE INCREASED TORQUE AT HIGH ENGINE SPEED.

TL;DR: In this paper, a pair of sensing lever having mechanical belt position sensors in contact with opposite edges of the belt is provided for sensing a shift in the belt position along the longitudinal axis of a belt support roller.
Abstract: This disclosure illustrates an inexpensive and reliable mechanical system for maintaining an endless transport belt in alignment with its direction of travel. A pair of sensing levers having mechanical belt position sensors in contact with opposite edges of the belt is provided for sensing a shift in the belt position along the longitudinal axis of a belt support roller. As the belt commences to shift, one of the sensing levers is actuated to apply a mechanically magnified torque to a roller adjusting lever coupled thereto, which torque is again magnified and applied in turn to the roller in a direction to induce increased tensile stress in the belt to cause the belt to become realigned with respect to its direction of motion.

Abstract: A pulley making method and apparatus for forming a pulley having a pulley groove of given cross section defined by flange walls connected through the root of the groove, the groove having a given root diameter, from a pulley blank in the form of a sheet metal cup having an annular bulge in the cup wall and an adjacent flaring wall portion, with a valley defined between the bulge and adjacent flaring wall portion. A pulley is formed from the blank by engaging the flaring wall portion and the side of the bulge remote from the valley with axially movable dies and moving the dies together to crush the bulge and form it into a double wall. Groove-forming rolls are positioned within the valley so that they extend radially inwardly to an imaginary circle having a diameter equal to the root diameter prior to the attainment of a final forming position by the axially movable dies. Relative rotation is established between the pulley blank and the group of rolls and the rolls roll within the valley to receive the axial thrust of the bulge as its crushing is completed, and to keep the valley clear as its shape approaches and conforms to the desired pulley groove cross section.
