TL;DR: In this article, the steering wheel is on a swing-arm standing out laterally from the backbone, the backbone supporting the steering shaft in a position not "aimed" at the driver.
Abstract: An electric vehicle of adequate performance and range and of low cost uses a long tray of batteries easily rolled into or from a housing which also comprises a structural backbone of the car. The body provides useful space, such as a passenger compartment on both sides of the backbone, extending down to about the level of the bottom of the backbone, thereby keeping a low center of gravity, and compactness for low wind resistance. The steering wheel is on a swing-arm standing out laterally from the backbone, the backbone supporting the steering shaft in a position not "aimed" at the driver. The steering arm swings out of the way to facilitate access, and in one form of the invention the body top swings open and there are no side doors. Separate V belt drives from the motor through automatic speed-changing pulleys for each side minimize current draw on start-up and acceleration, maximize performance, ensure driving both drive wheels in slippery weather, and permit differential wheel speed on turns. Independent suspension of the drive wheels ("knee action") without universal joints is achieved by using the flexibility of the V belts to permit the driven pulley to rock out of alignment with the drive pulley.

TL;DR: In this paper, the driving device includes a pair of coaxial driving pulleys, of respective different diameters, driven directly by the motor of the vehicle, and a driven pulley connected to a shaft in turn connected, by respective coupling means, to a rear driving wheel.
Abstract: The driving device includes a pair of coaxial driving pulleys, of respective different diameters, driven directly by the motor of the vehicle, and a driven pulley connected to a shaft in turn connected, by respective coupling means, to a pair of rear driving wheels. The vehicle includes a dirigible front steering wheel. Each driving pulley has a respective endless belt trained therearound and arranged to drive the driven pulley. A single control lever is pivoted, intermediate its ends, for swinging about mutually perpendicular first and second axes, the first axis extending transversely of the vehicle and the second axis extending longitudinally of the vehicle. The lower, or operating, end of the single control lever is connected to a pair of tensioning pulleys each cooperable with a respective endless belt. When the lever is swung, from a neutral position, in one direction about the first axis, one endless belt is tensioned to drive the driven pulley and, when the lever is swung in the opposite direction about the first axis, the other endless belt is effective to drive the driven pulley. On one embodiment of the invention, each endless belt drives the driven pulley at a respective different forward speed and, in another embodiment of the invention, one endless belt drives the driven pulley at a respective forward speed and the other endless belt drives the driven pulley at a respective reverse speed. A cable, trained over pulleys, connects the operating end of the control lever to the dirigible wheel so that, as the control lever is swung in either direction about the second axis, the dirigible wheel is steered in a corresponding direction. Link means connect the single control lever to the driven axle to shift the same paraxially and, responsive to the control lever being swung to make a tight turn, the linkage means, through the driven shaft, disengages the coupling means connecting the driven shaft to the rear driving wheel then on the inside of the tight turn.

TL;DR: In this paper, the subject transmission has a casing with spaced pulley elements composed of sets or pairs of cone-faced disk sections, each pair of each pair is axially movable toward and away from the other disk section to change the effective diameters of the pulleys and vary the speed ratio between the driving and driven pulleys.
Abstract: The subject transmission has a casing with spaced pulley elements composed of sets or pairs of cone-faced disk sections. The sections of each pair are in opposed relation and supported for simultaneous rotation about axes disposed in predetermined angular relation. One pair of disk sections is adapted to be power driven, a Vee belt having a predetermined compressibility with spaced lobes on the inner sides being trained around the sets of pulleys and transmitting rotary movement from the power driven set, hereinafter designated ''''the driving set,'''' to the other driven set. One disk section of each pair is axially movable toward and away from the other disk section to change the effective diameters of the pulleys and vary the speed ratio between the driving and driven pulleys. Through use of the angular rotational axes arrangement high friction materials, such as polyurethane on brass, may be used which permits a reduction in the belt frictional surface area, for a specific belt tension, and consequently the use of smaller pulleys.

TL;DR: In this article, the engine and torque converter are mounted to the frame of a snowmobile through vibration isolation bushings, which eliminates misalignment of the torque converter drive belt and reduces fatigue failure of snowmobile chassis.
Abstract: A mounting structure for the engine and torque converter of a snowmobile, which makes the engine and torque converter a separate unit. The engine-torque converter unit is then mounted to the frame of the machine through vibration isolation bushings. The unit mounting eliminates misalignment of the torque converter drive belt. The mounting also reduces fatigue failure of snowmobile chassis because both the drive and driven pulleys are connected to the engine, and the chassis does not have to carry the high belt load as is required when the pulley forming the torque converter is separately mounted from the engine.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variable sheave V-belt torque converter, particularly suitable for use with engine driven vehicles such as snowmobiles or the like, is controlled so that a wider spread is obtained between the engine speed at the time of belt engagement and the engine's speed at completion of the shift.
Abstract: A method and apparatus wherein a variable sheave V-belt torque converter, particularly suitable for use with engine driven vehicles such as snowmobiles or the like, is controlled so that a wider spread is obtained between the engine speed at the time of belt engagement and the engine speed at the time of completion of the shift. Belt engagement occurs at an engine speed relatively close to idle speed, and shifting operations are delayed until about a speed corresponding to that of maximum engine torque. Completion of shifting occurs at about a speed corresponding to the speed of maximum engine power. This belt engagement and shifting control, which improved acceleration and climbing ability of an engine driven vehicle such as a snowmobile, is provided through multi-stage resilient control of the operation of centrifugal clutch shoes engageable with the movable pulley section of the torque converter. Such control may be accomplished through the use of a plurality of garter springs, or a plurality of compression springs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a doubly-conical compression ring is seated on a hub sleeve which is composed of steel and is elastically compressible, and a pair of annular thrust rings having similar conicities are provided with equispaced bores through which bolts are threaded to draw the thrust rings together and urge the hub sleeve under radial compression against the shaft.
Abstract: An annular member, such as a flywheel, pulley, sprocket wheel or disk, is secured to a shaft for torque transmission therebetween by a hub sleeve having an internally smooth, circumferentially continuous nonsplit configuration adapted to smoothly fit over the shaft. A doubly-conical compression ring is seated on the sleeve which is composed of steel and is elastically compressible. The compression ring is clamped between a pair of annular thrust rings having similar conicities and provided with equispaced bores through which bolts are threaded to draw the thrust rings together and urge the sleeve under radial compression against the shaft. When the torque capacity of the system is M, the axial compression force S is established such that the relationships S 2.3 M/(d-20) or S 3 M/(d-20) result, where d is the diameter of the shaft. Under these conditions, the sleeve is elastically deformed in a circumferentially undulating pattern and elastically deforms the shaft in a corresponding manner to bring about a mating noncircular fit between the sleeve and shaft to prevent slippage.

TL;DR: In this paper, a tracking mechanism for centering a sanding belt of a belt sander is proposed, where a linkage means is connected to the frame of the sander, and a mounting bracket to which an idler pulley is rotatively connected.
Abstract: A tracking mechanism for centering a sanding belt of a belt sander, wherein a linkage means is connected to the frame of the sander. The linkage means carries a mounting bracket to which an idler pulley is rotatively connected. The linkage means has a plurality of links pivotally interconnected to each other to form a frusto-polyhedron whose vertex defines a pivot point disposed forwardly of the idler pulley, so that when unbalanced forces act on one side of the idler pulley, the linkage means will be caused to rotate about the pivot point to produce a turning movement thereabout, and cause the opposite side of the idler pulley to counteract the initial forces by shifting and restoring the idler pulley to a balanced position. The pivot center line intersects a plane passing through the center line of the sanding belt, which plane is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the pulley. This location of the pivot point also will serve to aid tracking of, and limit runoff of the sanding belt from the pulley.
