TL;DR: In this paper, a new serpentine belt system model incorporating the belt bending stiffness is established, and a computational method based on boundary value problem solvers is developed to obtain the numerically exact solution of the non[ linear equilibrium equations.
Abstract: Serpentine belt drives with spring-loaded tensioners are now widely used in the automotive industry. Experimental measurements show that linear system vibration coupling exists between the pulley rotations and the transverse span deflections. Former models that treat the belt as a string and neglect the belt bending stiffness cannot explain this coupling phenomenon. In this paper a new serpentine belt system model incorporating the belt bending stiffness is established. The finite belt bending stiffness causes nontrivial transverse span equilibria, in contrast to string models with straight span equilibria. Nontrivial span equilibria cause linear span-pulley coupling, and the degree of coupling is determined by the equilibrium curvatures. A computational method based on boundary value problem solvers is developed to obtain the numerically exact solution of the non[ linear equilibrium equations. An approximate analytical solution of closed-form is also obtained for the case of small bending stiffness. Based on these solutions, the effects of design variables on the equilibrium deflections and span-pulley coupling are investigated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry semiconductor wafers with a large degree of freedom in carriage while reducing the footprint of a system where a plurality of vacuum processing chambers are connected to the circumference of an airtight carrying chamber provided with a substrate carrying system. TL;DR: In this paper, the rotational vibration of a belt drive system with a dry friction tensioner subjected to multiple harmonic excitations is studied, and an analytical solution procedure is developed for the first time to predict two kinds of periodic responses of the system, i.e., nonstop and one-stop motion characterized by the nonstick and stick-slip vibration of the tensioner arm in the system.
Abstract: In this paper, the rotational vibration of a belt drive system with a dry friction tensioner subjected to multiple harmonic excitations is studied. The work is focused on the impact of the dry friction torque combined with the multiexcitation frequencies on dynamic characteristics of the system. An analytical solution procedure is developed for the first time to predict two kinds of periodic responses of the system, i.e., nonstop and one-stop motion characterized by the nonstick and stick-slip vibration of the tensioner arm in the system, respectively. Utilizing this method, parametric studies are carried out to obtain the frequency response of a prototypical belt drive system subjected to harmonic excitations from both the driving and driven pulleys. It is found that the tensioner Coulomb friction torque has a significant impact on the amplitude response of the system-it reduces the vibration amplitude of the tensioner arm, but for other components in the belt system it can either decrease or increase the amplitudes under different situations. Furthermore, if the excitation frequency from the driving pulley is larger than or equal to that from the driven pulley, the system vibration amplitudes are much larger than those under the opposite condition.

TL;DR: The results indicate that increases, confined to horizontal eye-movement amplitude and velocity, may be attributed to passive properties within the orbit, and no clear impact was discerned of lateral eye exposure that could be directly attributable to the active lateral pulley system.
Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that extraocular muscle (EOM) pulleys, composed of collagen, elastin, and smooth muscle, are among the tissues surrounding the eye. High-resolution magnetic-resonance imaging appears to indicate that the pulleys serve to both constrain and alter the pulling paths of the EOMs. The active pulley hypothesis suggests that the orbital layer of the EOMs inserts on the pulley and serves to control it. Based on anatomical data, the active pulley hypothesis also suggests that the orbital layer does not rotate the eye within the orbit; this is done by the global layer of the muscle. However, no physiological data exist to confirm this hypothesis. Here we used stimulation-evoked eye movements in anesthetized monkeys and cats before and after destruction of the lateral rectus muscle pulley by removal of the lateral bony orbit and adjacent orbital tissue. The absence of these structures resulted in increased lateral, in the primate, and medial, in the cat, eye-movement amplitude and velocity. Vertical eye movements in the cat were not significantly affected. The results indicate that these increases, confined to horizontal eye-movement amplitude and velocity, may be attributed to passive properties within the orbit. In relation to the active pulley hypothesis, we could discern no clear impact (in terms of amplitude or velocity profile of the movements) of lateral eye exposure that could be directly attributable to the active lateral pulley system.

TL;DR: A biomechanical study was conducted to test 5 proximal tendon pulley sites or routes of tendon transfer and 2 distal tendon insertion sites that are used commonly for performing a thumb opposition transfer.
Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this biomechanical study was to test 5 proximal tendon pulley sites or routes of tendon transfer and 2 distal tendon insertion sites that are used commonly for performing a thumb opposition transfer. Methods Five fresh-frozen cadaver arms were used to test (1) an around flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) pulley, (2) an FCU loop pulley, (3) a Guyon's canal pulley, (4) a junction of the distal edge of the transverse carpal ligament and the ulnar border of the palmar aponeurosis (Royle-Thompson pulley), and (5) a palmar thenar subcutaneous transfer (Camitz). Two tendon insertion sites were tested: a palmar radial insertion into the abductor pollicis brevis and a dorsal ulnar insertion into the thumb proximal phalanx. Results The Guyon's canal and Royle-Thompson pulleys produced the greatest amount of approximation of the thumb pulp to the fifth metacarpal head. The around the FCU pulley, FCU loop pulley, and Camitz transfer produced the greatest palmar abduction. The Guyon's canal and Royle-Thompson pulleys were the most mechanically efficient pulleys, producing the least amount of transmitted force. The palmar radial insertion site produced better thumb opposition, metacarpophalangeal oint abduction, metacarpophalangeal joint flexion, and approximation of the thumb pulp to the fifth metacarpal head. Conclusions We conclude that the choice of the proximal pulley used may depend on the needs of the transfer, and a palmar radial thumb insertion is more effective than the dorsal ulnar insertion.

Abstract: During a downshift of a belt-drive continuously variable transmission, occurring owing to vehicle deceleration, a CVT controller foretells that a slippage between a drive belt and each of primary and secondary variable-width pulleys tends to occur, when a primary pulley pressure is less than a first predetermined pressure level and a primary pulley speed is less than a first predetermined rotational speed. When the belt slippage has been foretold, the CVT controller inhibits the primary pulley pressure from dropping by setting an actual transmission ratio calculated before a set time period from a time when the slippage has been foretold or a transmission ratio of a relatively higher speed side as compared with a ratio-change operating state obtained when the slippage has been foretold, to a desired transmission ratio, or by relatively rising a line pressure as compared with a line pressure level produced when the slippage has been foretold.
