TL;DR: A kinematic model for a pulley mechanism of the winches is revisited and a corrected structure equation is derived and the different results from the extended model are compared with the estimation from the simplified standard model with respect to kinematics transformation, workspace, and force distribution.
Abstract: In this paper the modeling of a pulley mechanism for cable-driven parallel robots is presented. In many works, the proximal anchor points of the robots are simplified to be ideal points. Real cables achieve reasonable life time only when a minimum bending radius is exceeded. Therefore, pulley mechanisms have to be used which in turn require the extension of the kinematic modeling. In this paper a kinematic model for a pulley mechanism of the winches is revisited. Then we derive a corrected structure equation and compare the different results from the extended model with the estimation from the simplified standard model with respect to kinematics transformation, workspace, and force distribution.

TL;DR: Understanding the anatomical configuration of the thumb pulley system will aid in the surgical attempt to resolve triggering while avoiding complications such as bowstringing of the flexor pollicis longus tendon and iatrogenic nerve injury.
Abstract: Purpose The anatomical arrangement of the thumb pulley system continues to be revised through ongoing investigative research, changing our previous assumptions. This study demonstrates the components and anatomical features of this pulley system in an effort to improve surgical outcomes and to clarify current misconceptions. Methods Researchers procured 75 hand specimens from 41 adult cadavers through our institution's anatomical donations program. Dissections of the thumb and thenar compartment identified the various pulleys. A detailed analysis of the thumb pulleys was performed through various measurements. Results Four different pulley categories were identified: type I (n = 5), type II (n = 29), type III (n = 29), and type IV (n = 12). The variable annular pulley was present in 70 of 75 hands (93%) in 1 of 3 arrangements: transverse, oblique, or fused with the A1 pulley. Conclusions The pulley system of the thumb is composed of 4 components, as opposed to the traditional view of only 3. Along with the A1 pulley, the additional variable annular pulley might contribute to stenosis in trigger thumb. This might necessitate a more extensive surgical incision and its partial release to relieve triggering. Clinical relevance Understanding the anatomical configuration of the thumb pulley system will aid in the surgical attempt to resolve triggering while avoiding complications such as bowstringing of the flexor pollicis longus tendon and iatrogenic nerve injury.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dynamics of a belt drive are considered in the framework of a nonlinear model of an extensible elastic string, in which the trajectories of particles of the string are pre-determined, and the general equations of string dynamics to the spatial description.
Abstract: The dynamics of a belt drive is considered in the framework of a nonlinear model of an extensible elastic string. Under the assumption of contour motion, in which the trajectories of particles of the string are pre-determined, we transform the general equations of string dynamics to the spatial description. Further simplification regarding the absence of slip of the belt on the surface of the pulleys leads to a new model with a discontinuous velocity field and concentrated contact forces. It is shown how the computed parameters of steady operation of the drive are influenced by the chosen strain measure for the string, and differences in the behavior of synchronous and friction belt drives are pointed out. For a sample set-up, we study the dependence of the maximal transmitted moment on the angular velocities of the pulleys and on the pre-tension of the belt.
