TL;DR: In this paper, a narrow belt 11 passes over a driving pulley 12, a tension roller 27, a hollow heating pulley 16, and a heating shoe 39, and the temperature of the central portion of belt 11 is sufficient to form a seam in the overlap.
Abstract: 752,568. Heating by electric resistances. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 27, 1954 [Jan. 28, 1953], No. 2503/54. Class 39(3). [Also in Groups VIII and XVII] In apparatus for seaming the wrapping film 58 of a package 56 (see Group VIII), a narrow belt 11 passes over a driving pulley 12, a tension roller 27, a hollow heating pulley 16, and a heating shoe 39. Pulley 16 is heated by a stationary electric heater 37 extending into the interior of the pulley, and shoe 39 is heated by an electric heater 43 with a thermostat 44. Pulley 16- and shoe 39 contact only the central portions of belt II through a peripheral rib 33 on the pulley and an upstanding rib 45 on the shoe. Pulley 16 and shoe 39 are provided with thermal insulation. In operation, a package 56 is fed by belt 11 beneath pressure rollers 68 with the overlap 59 of the thermoplastic wrapping film 58 resting on belt 11 and the edge of the package bearing against a combined support and edge guide 61. - The temperature of the central portion of belt 11 is sufficient to form a seam in the overlap 59. The belt may be made of corrosion-resistant metal such as phosphor bronze or stainless steel ; adhesion between the package and the belt is then reduced by a thin film of a substance, such as silicone oil, to which the heated film material will not adhere, applied by a roller 55 to the outer surface of the belt. Alternatively, the belt may be made of a silicone rubber, or of woven glass fibres impregnated with a heat and adhesion-resistant substance such as polytetrafluoroethylene.

TL;DR: A novel high-performance, cable-drive module with rolling cable transmissions (RoCT) that can efficiently transmit motion and mechanical power from an input to an output via an inner cable/rope and its properties are presented.
Abstract: Bowden cables are frequently used as remote transmissions on wearable devices because of their light weight, simplicity, and flexibility of design. However, a Bowden cable suffers from inefficiency, nonlinear backlash, and cable tension variation due to the bending of the cable housing and friction losses, leading to deteriorating force control performance, and a wearers comfort level and augmentation effectiveness. In this paper, to enhance wearable device performance and to overcome the above drawbacks, we propose a novel high-performance, cable-drive module with rolling cable transmissions (RoCT) that can efficiently transmit motion and mechanical power from an input to an output via an inner cable/rope. The RoCT is compact, modular, lightweight, extremely stiff, highly backdrivable, and is freely rotatable and translatable during manipulation. It maintains the cable tension regardless of the transmission angle between the input and output. The configuration of the proposed tethered cable-drive module, the working principle of the rolling cable transmission, and its properties, are introduced. Mechanical designs based on the working principle are also provided. Finally, as one of the applications of the proposed module, a tethered ankle exoskeleton system and its experimental results demonstrating the properties of the proposed transmission are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, an electromagnetic clutch assembly adapted for use in actuating a refrigerant compressor having a drive shaft with a continuously driven pulley rotatably supported about the drive shaft is described.
Abstract: An electromagnetic clutch assembly adapted for use in actuating a refrigerant compressor having a drive shaft with a continuously driven pulley rotatably supported about the drive shaft. An armature plate is supported in spaced parallel relationship from the pulley friction plate by an elastomeric torque cushion which extends between the drive shaft and the armature plate. The elastomeric torque cushion is capable of flexing to allow the armature plate to bridge the gap under the influence of an electromagnetic force to engage the pulley friction plate thereby translating power from the pulley to the drive shaft. The torque cushion includes at least one reinforcing member disposed within the cushion for preventing the torque cushion from buckling as torque is translated from the pulley through the armature plate and the torque cushion to the drive shaft.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an approach to estimate the acceleration time of a specific horizontal belt conveyor with respect to the belt tension rating, demanded safety factor and the ratio between belt tension before and after drive pulley.
Abstract: Speed control has been found a feasible mean to reduce the energy consumption of belt conveyors. However, the current research has not taken the determination of the acceleration in transient operation into account sufficiently. With respect to the belt tension rating, demanded safety factor and the ratio between belt tension before and after drive pulley, this paper presents an approach to estimate the acceleration time. Case with specific horizontal belt conveyor is studied. The simulations with finite element model are carried out to analyze the belt dynamic behaviors in transient operation. Further simulations are carried out to get the optimum acceleration time.
