TL;DR: An elevator system includes a counterweight-drive assembly (26) having a motor (32) and drive pulley (36) mounted internally to engage a drive belt (42) for climbing or descending with respect thereto, resulting in raising or lowering of an elevator car coupled to said counterweight drive assembly.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-locking descender for a rope comprises a pulley in the form of a rotary cam designed to press the rope against a braking surface of a stud.
Abstract: A self-locking descender for a rope comprises a pulley in the form of a rotary cam designed to press the rope against a braking surface of a stud. The pulley is mounted on an operating plate associated with an operating handle. To reduce the unlocking force on the operating lever, a part of the friction forces is taken up by a load-shedding pin situated facing the circular sector of the cam. The rope passes via the load-shedding pin and comes partially into contact with the pulley.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-link robot comprising two links joined by a pivot joint is described, where the pivot joint allows the robot to lean to either side of the pivot.
Abstract: Robots comprising two links joined by a pivot joint are provided. In some cases, the pivot joint allows the robot to lean to either side. One link of the robot includes an electrically activated actuator such as an electric motor configured to rotate a pulley. A belt is engaged with the actuator, and the ends of the belt are coupled to the other link on either side of the pivot joint. Tensioners, such as springs, provide tension on either side of the belt. Actuating the actuator changes the position of the belt to respond to sloping surfaces and turns, for example.

TL;DR: In this article, a continuously variable, regenerative transmission assembly is employed in conjunction with a regenerative gear assembly incorporating high and low clutches and situated intermediate a vehicle engine, and an output, such as the drive train to vehicle wheels.
Abstract: A continuously variable, regenerative transmission is disclosed in which a continuously variable transmission assembly is employed in conjunction with a regenerative gear assembly incorporating high and low clutches and situated intermediate a prime mover, such as a vehicle engine, and an output, such as the drive train to vehicle wheels. By monitoring certain system conditions (such as the rate and direction of rotation desired for the output, the rate of rotation of the engine and belt slip) while simultaneously controlling the engine speed, a control subsystem adjusts the effective diameters of input and output pulleys of the continuously variable transmission assembly to obtain a pulley torque versus belt tension that gives a belt slip value which results in rotation of the output in the desired direction at a rate according to a predetermined ratio schedule of the rate of rotation of the engine with respect to the rate of rotation of the output under the measured instantaneous conditions and in view of the output speed desired.
