TL;DR: In this paper, the influences of EDM pulse condition on the micro-EDM properties were investigated and the experimental results showed that the voltage and current of the pulse exert strongly to the machining properties and the shorter EDM pulses are more efficient to make a precision part with a higher material removal rate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of coherently excited ground electronic state rotational levels of I2, using excitation with an intense nonresonant picosecond laser, was studied.
Abstract: We report experiments on the formation of wave packets consisting of coherently excited ground electronic state rotational levels of I2, using excitation with an intense nonresonant picosecond laser. As measured in a velocity-map-imaging experiment using Coulomb explosion for the determination of the angular distribution of the molecules, these wave packets display alignment of the internuclear axis along the laser polarization axis, both during the laser interaction and at well-defined time delays following the laser interaction, which correspond to rotational revival times of the molecule. The alignment is studied as a function of the intensity and the pulse duration of the pump laser, the rotational temperature of the molecular beam, the polarization geometry of the pump and probe lasers, and the fragment-ion-charge state used to probe the alignment. We observe experimentally that the alignment at revival times is maximal for intermediate pulse durations of a few picoseconds, where the laser–molecule i...

TL;DR: Comparison of killing data on S. cerevisiae S6/1 with those on the smaller-celled Kluyveramyces lactis showed the killing pulse amplitude to be roughly proportional to cell size except for low pulse amplitudes, at which smaller cells are much more killing-prone.

TL;DR: Diode-pumped mode-locked laser operation based on Yb(3+):Sc(2)O(3) and Yb-3+:Y( 2)O (3) multi-gain-media oscillator has been demonstrated and the optical-to-optical efficiency was 18.8%.
Abstract: Diode-pumped mode-locked laser operation based on Yb(3+):Sc(2)O(3) and Yb(3+):Y(2)O(3) multi-gain-media oscillator has been demonstrated. 66-fs pulse duration with an average power of 1.5 W and 53-fs pulse duration with an average power of 1 W under 8-W laser diode pumping were achieved. The optical-to-optical efficiency was 18.8%. Additionally, 68-fs pulse duration with an average power of 540 mW from Yb(3+):Y(2)O(3) ceramic was also obtained.

TL;DR: The experimental results demonstrate that parasitic lasing can be suppressed successfully in the final amplifier based on a Ti:sapphire crystal of 150 mm in diameter and represent notable progress regarding the CPA laser.
Abstract: We report on the generation of 192.3 J centered at 800 nm wavelength from a chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system. The experimental results demonstrate that parasitic lasing can be suppressed successfully in the final amplifier based on a Ti:sapphire crystal of 150 mm in diameter. An over 50% pump-to-signal conversion efficiency was measured for the final amplifier by optimizing the time delay of two pump pulses and enhancing the injected seed energy. With 72% compressor throughput efficiency and 27 fs long compressed pulse duration obtained at a lower energy level, this laser could potentially support a compressed laser pulse of 5.13 PW peak power. The experimental results represent notable progress regarding the CPA laser.
