TL;DR: This work gives the description of the time-invariant MDFT filter bank including its perfect reconstruction (PR) condition, its mechanism of aliasing error cancellation and the relationship with the cosine-modulated filter bank in detail.
Abstract: We provide a comprehensive analysis of the time-varying modified DFT (MDFT) filter bank based on the general time-varying filter bank theories (Wang, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009) in both the time domain and frequency domain. We give firstly the description of the time-invariant MDFT filter bank including its perfect reconstruction (PR) condition, its mechanism of aliasing error cancellation and the relationship with the cosine-modulated filter bank in detail. Then, the time-varying MDFT filter bank is analyzed according to the time-domain description. Finally, the window switching method is introduced to design the prototype filter in the time-varying MDFT filter bank with examples. The error analysis shows that the introduced design approach is useful in practice.

TL;DR: An efficient subband adaptive beamforming array (ABA) using a quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank is presented and shows improved signal gain and deep suppression of the interference in the direction perpendicular to the ABA.
Abstract: An efficient subband adaptive beamforming array (ABA) using a quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank is presented. For wideband beamforming, taps have to be added to the full-band ABA for efficient suppression of the interference. However, the introduction of multiple taps results in the addition of uncorrelated noise to the ABA. This results in power loss in the direction perpendicular to the ABA. In order to compensate for the loss introduced by the addition of taps, the proposed concept is investigated. This configuration shows improved signal gain and deep suppression of the interference in the direction perpendicular to the ABA.

TL;DR: A modification of Differential Evolution (DE), Fitness-Adaptive Differential evolution (FiADE) is used to design the quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks with linear phase in frequency domain and produces better result than the result obtained by Particle Swarm Optimization.
Abstract: In this article, a modification of Differential Evolution (DE), Fitness-Adaptive Differential Evolution (FiADE) is used to design the quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks with linear phase in frequency domain. The three main attributes used in assessing the performance of filter are reconstruction error, mean square error in pass band and mean square error in stop band. The proposed method produces better result than the result obtained by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). As compared to the existing methods this method is very simple to implement for the QMF bank optimization. To implement the proposed DE algorithm, a MATLAB program is developed and three examples have been presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

TL;DR: The proposed technique outperforms the adaptive transform coding and adaptive vector quantization techniques for the tested sequences and the visual quality of the encoded test sequences is almost indistinguishable from the originals.
Abstract: A low bit rate adaptive video coding technique is proposed. The redundancy within adjacent video frames is exploited by motion-compensated interframe prediction, and the motion-compensated frame difference (MCFD) signal is decomposed by using a quadrature mirror filter (QMF) structure. The subband signals are vector quantized adaptively. The MCFD signals are low correlated, hence transform coding techniques are not very suitable for this kind of signal source. At 0.25-0.3 bits/pixel range, 38-40-dB peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio is achieved with the proposed scheme for four monochrome test sequences used: cindy, mono, duo, and quartet. The visual quality of the encoded test sequences is good, almost indistinguishable from the originals. The proposed technique outperforms the adaptive transform coding and adaptive vector quantization techniques for the tested sequences. >

TL;DR: The proposed IIR filter bank with 3 zeros at z=1 for the analysis lowpass filter, has less computational complexity and produces better results in terms of PSNR than the FIR filter bank, namely the two-channel linear phase biorthogonal (9,7)-taps.
Abstract: In this paper, we focus on two-channel perfect reconstruction IIR filter banks. Often two-channel FIR filter banks with additional characteristics such as the perfect reconstruction property and linear phase are used in subband systems. This type of filter banks belongs to the class called biorthogonal filter banks. While several works have pointed out that the perfect reconstruction IIR filter banks have both linear phase and orthogonality, the linear phase orthogonal IIR filter banks have never been applied to image coding. Then we apply the two-channel perfect reconstruction IIR filter banks consisted of allpass filters, with both linear phase and orthogonality, to image coding and show that the proposed IIR filter bank with 3 zeros at z=1 for the analysis lowpass filter, has less computational complexity and produces better results in terms of PSNR than the FIR filter bank, namely the two-channel linear phase biorthogonal (9,7)-taps. Consequently both linear phase and orthogonality are essential to improve coding performance.
