Abstract: This article presents a dialogic qualitative interview design for a narrative study of six international UK university students' motivation for learning English. Based on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, this design was developed in order to address the limitations of member-checking [Lincoln, Y. S., and E. G. Guba. 1985. Naturalistic Inquiry. Newbury Park, CA: Sage] as a means by which participants' responses to data and interpretation might be gathered. Through a personalized reflection on my design and consideration of attitudes to member-checking, I demonstrate that a more explicit co-constructedness is evident in both the design and the data generated, and I offer this design as a more collaborative, more ethical alternative to member-checking in particular, and as an approach to qualitative research interviews in general.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting between 2 and 17% of women of reproductive age. Common symptoms are chronic pelvic pain, fatigue, congestive dysmenorrhoea, heavy menstrual bleeding and deep dyspareunia. Studies have demonstrated the considerable negative impact of this condition on women's quality of life (QoL), especially in the domains of pain and psychosocial functioning. The impact of endometriosis is likely to be exacerbated by the absence of an obvious cause and the likelihood of chronic, recurring symptoms. The aims of this paper are to review the current body of knowledge on the social and psychological impact of endometriosis on women's lives; to provide insights into women's experience of endometriosis; to provide a critical commentary on the current state of knowledge and to make recommendations for future psycho-social research. METHODS The review draws on a method of critical narrative synthesis to discuss a heterogeneous range of both quantitative and qualitative studies from several disciplines. This included a systematic search, a structured process for selecting and collecting data and a systematic thematic analysis of results. RESULTS A total of 42 papers were included in the review; 23 used quantitative methods, 16 used qualitative methods and 3 were mixed methods studies. The majority of papers came from just four countries: UK (10), Australia (8), Brazil (6) and the USA (5). Key categories of impact identified in the thematic analysis were diagnostic delay and uncertainty; 'QoL' and everyday activities; intimate relationships; planning for and having children; education and work; mental health and emotional wellbeing and medical management and self-management. CONCLUSIONS Endometriosis has a significant social and psychological impact on the lives of women across several domains. Many studies have methodological limitations and there are significant gaps in the literature especially in relation to a consideration of the impact on partners and children. We recommend additional prospective and longitudinal research utilizing mixed methods approaches and endometriosis-specific instruments to explore the impact of endometriosis in more diverse populations and settings. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to develop and evaluate interventions for supporting women and partners living with this chronic and often debilitating condition.

Abstract: The overall purpose of research for any profession is to discover the truth of the discipline. This paper examines the controversy over the methods by which truth is obtained, by examining the differences and similarities between quantitative and qualitative research. The historically negative bias against qualitative research is discussed, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches, with issues highlighted by reference to nursing research. Consideration is given to issues of sampling; the relationship between the researcher and subject; methodologies and collated data; validity; reliability, and ethical dilemmas. The author identifies that neither approach is superior to the other; qualitative research appears invaluable for the exploration of subjective experiences of patients and nurses, and quantitative methods facilitate the discovery of quantifiable information. Combining the strengths of both approaches in triangulation, if time and money permit, is also proposed as a valuable means of discovering the truth about nursing. It is argued that if nursing scholars limit themselves to one method of enquiry, restrictions will be placed on the development of nursing knowledge.

Abstract: The present essay outlines how mixed methods research can be used to enhance the interpretation of significant findings. First, we define what we mean by significance in educational evaluation research. With regard to quantitative-based research, we define the four types of significance: statistical significance, practical significance, clinical significance, and economic significance. With respect to qualitative-based research, we define a significant finding as one that has meaning or representation. Second, we describe limitations of each of these types of significance. Finally, we illustrate how conducting mixed methods analyses can be used to enhance the interpretation of significant findings in both quantitative and qualitative educational evaluation and policy research. Consequently, mixed methods research represents the real "gold standard" for studying phenomena. Key Words: Quantitative Research, Qualitative Research, Mixed Methods, Significance, Meaning and Verstehen ********** Setting the Scene One argument posited by proponents of mixed methods studies is that they address much more comprehensive research purposes than do quantitative or qualitative research alone (Newman, Ridenour, Newman, & DeMarco, 2003). Consistent with this assertion, and expanding on Rossman and Wilson's (1985) work, Greene, Caracelli, and Graham (1989) categorized the following five general purposes of mixed-methodological studies: (a) triangulation (i.e., seeking convergence and corroboration of findings from different methods that study the same phenomenon); (b) complementarity (i.e., seeking elaboration, illustration, enhancement, and clarification of the findings from one method with results from the other method); (c) development (i.e., using the findings from one method to help inform the other method); (d) initiation (i.e., discovering paradoxes and contradictions that lead to a re-framing of the research question); and (e) expansion (i.e., seeking to expand the breadth and range of inquiry by using different methods for different inquiry components). As observed by Greene et al. (1989), every mixed methodological study can be classified as having one or more of these five purposes. In recent years, the advantages of mixed methods research have been increasingly recognized. In particular, as noted by Onwuegbuzie and Leech (in press), combining quantitative and qualitative research enables evaluation researchers to be more flexible and holistic in their investigative techniques, as they endeavor to address a range of complex research questions that arise. Further, mixed methods research helps investigators to develop a conceptual framework, to validate quantitative results by linking the information extracted from the qualitative phase of the study, and to construct indices from qualitative data that can be utilized to analyze quantitative data (Madey, 1982). Also, by conducting mixed methods studies, researchers are in a better position to combine empirical precision with descriptive precision (Onwuegbuzie, 2003a). In addition, by employing a pragmatist lens (i.e., using both quantitative and qualitative techniques), rather than using a single lens (i.e., conducting monomethod studies), investigators are able to zoom in to microscopic detail or to zoom out to indefinite scope (Willems & Raush, 1969). As such, mixed research investigations afford researchers with the opportunity to combine macro and micro levels of a study (Onwuegbuzie & Leech, in press). Compared to their monomethod counterparts, mixed methods researchers are more able to utilize quantitative research to inform the qualitative portion of research studies, and vice versa. For example, the inclusion of qualitative data can help investigators to explain relationships emerging from quantitative data. Similarly, the inclusion of quantitative data can help compensate for the fact that qualitative data typically cannot be generalized (Onwuegbuzie & Johnson, 2004). …
