TL;DR: This work reports on the experimental observation of the three-photon polarization-entangled W state using spontaneous parametric down-conversion and demonstrates the high degree of two- photon entanglement in the W state.
Abstract: We report on the experimental observation of the three-photon polarization-entangled W state using spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This state is inequivalent to the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state under stochastic local operations and classical communications and thus is the representative of the second class of genuine tripartite entanglement. We study the characteristic features of entanglement and demonstrate the high degree of two-photon entanglement in the W state.

TL;DR: It is proved that one of two mixed states can be transformed into the other by single-qubit operations if and only if these states have equal values of all 18 invariants, which provides a complete description of nonlocal properties.
Abstract: Entanglement of two parts of a quantum system is a nonlocal property unaffected by local manipulations of these parts. It can be described by quantities invariant under local unitary transformations. Here we present, for a system of two qubits, a set of invariants which provides a complete description of nonlocal properties. The set contains 18 real polynomials of the entries of the density matrix. We prove that one of two mixed states can be transformed into the other by single-qubit operations if and only if these states have equal values of all 18 invariants. Corresponding local operations can be found efficiently. Without any of these 18 invariants the set is incomplete. Similarly, nonlocal, entangling properties of two-qubit unitary gates are invariant under single-qubit operations. We present a complete set of 3 real polynomial invariants of unitary gates. Our results are useful for optimization of quantum computations since they provide an effective tool to verify if and how a given two-qubit operation can be performed using exactly one elementary two-qubit gate, implemented by a basic physical manipulation (and arbitrarily many single-qubit gates). TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the multiplicative negativity is bounded by a constant, independent of the number of qubits, for all bipartite divisions of the qubits.
Abstract: The ``power of one qubit'' refers to a computational model that has access to only one pure bit of quantum information, along with $n$ qubits in the totally mixed state. This model, though not as powerful as a pure-state quantum computer, is capable of performing some computational tasks exponentially faster than any known classical algorithm. One such task is to estimate with fixed accuracy the normalized trace of a unitary operator that can be implemented efficiently in a quantum circuit. We show that circuits of this type generally lead to entangled states, and we investigate the amount of entanglement possible in such circuits, as measured by the multiplicative negativity. We show that the multiplicative negativity is bounded by a constant, independent of $n$, for all bipartite divisions of the $n+1$ qubits, and so becomes, when $n$ is large, a vanishingly small fraction of the maximum possible multiplicative negativity for roughly equal divisions. This suggests that the global nature of entanglement is a more important resource for quantum computation than the magnitude of the entanglement.

TL;DR: A double quantum dot based on Ge/Si nanowires in which one can completely control the coupling between the dots and to the leads and it is demonstrated that charge on the double dot can be detected by coupling it capacitively to an adjacent nanowire quantum dot.
Abstract: One proposal for a solid-state-based quantum bit (qubit) is to control coupled electron spins on adjacent semiconductor quantum dots. Most experiments have focused on quantum dots made from III-V semiconductors; however, the coherence of electron spins in these materials is limited by hyperfine interactions with nuclear spins. Ge/Si core/shell nanowires seem ideally suited to overcome this limitation, because the most abundant nuclei in Ge and Si have spin zero and the nanowires can be chemically synthesized defect-free with tunable properties. Here, we present a double quantum dot based on Ge/Si nanowires in which we can completely control the coupling between the dots and to the leads. We also demonstrate that charge on the double dot can be detected by coupling it capacitively to an adjacent nanowire quantum dot. The double quantum dot and integrated charge sensor serve as an essential building block to form a solid-state qubit free of nuclear spin.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that up to ten-qubit states can be encoded in five photons, using both their polarization and momentum degrees of freedom, using only five photons.
Abstract: Creating entangled photon states becomes technologically ever more difficult as the number of particles increases, and the current record stands at six entangled photons. However, using both their polarization and momentum degrees of freedom, up to ten-qubit states can be encoded in ‘only’ five photons, as has now been demonstrated.
