TL;DR: The theoretical basis of antenna tolerance theory is reviewed in this paper, where the axial loss of gain and pattern degradation as a function of the reflector surface rms error and the surface spatial correlation are discussed.
Abstract: The theoretical basis of antenna tolerance theory is reviewed. Formulas are presented for the axial loss of gain and the pattern degradation as a function of the reflector surface rms error and the surface spatial correlation. Methods of determining these quantities by astronomical or ground-based electrical measurements are described. Correlation between the theoretical predictions and the performance of actual large antenna structures is presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high gain planar antenna with an optimized partially reflecting surface (PRS) placed in front of a waveguide aperture in a ground plane was investigated, where the antenna performance was initially related to the reflection characteristics of the PRS array following an approximate analysis.
Abstract: A high gain planar antenna has been investigated, using an optimised partially reflecting surface (PRS) placed in front of a waveguide aperture in a ground plane. The antenna performance is initially related to the reflection characteristics of the PRS array following an approximate analysis. The array geometry is optimised using an analytical formula. The optimisation results are verified using a full wave model taking into account the edge effects. The array size for maximum antenna efficiency has also been investigated.

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-band coplanar patch antenna integrated with an electromagnetic band gap substrate is described, where the antenna structure is made from common clothing fabrics and operates at the 2.45 and 5 GHz bands.
Abstract: Performance of a dual-band coplanar patch antenna integrated with an electromagnetic band gap substrate is described. The antenna structure is made from common clothing fabrics and operates at the 2.45 and 5 GHz wireless bands. The design of the coplanar antenna, band gap substrate, and their integration is presented. The band gap array consists of just 3 times 3 elements but reduces radiation into the body by over 10 dB and improves the antenna gain by 3 dB. The performance of the antenna under bending conditions and when placed on the human body are presented.

TL;DR: A method is described for analyzing the mean effective gain (MEG) of antennas moving in a mobile communication environment and it is shown that the theoretical curves calculated using the empirical parameters are in excellent agreement with experimental results.
Abstract: A method is described for analyzing the mean effective gain (MEG) of antennas moving in a mobile communication environment. The MEG characteristics of a mobile antenna are determined by the mutual relation between the antenna patterns and the statistical distribution of incident waves in an environment. To analyze this relation theoretically, a general expression for the MEG using a statistical model of incident waves is derived, and a novel statistical model, whose distribution is uniform in azimuth and Gaussian in elevation, is proposed. The validity of the statistical model is confirmed through 900-MHz-band measurements carried out in a Tokyo urban area, and the empirical parameters for the statistical distribution are described. The MEG characteristics of a half-wavelength dipole antenna are investigated using the proposed method, and it is shown that the theoretical curves calculated using the empirical parameters are in excellent agreement with experimental results. This analysis is extremely applicable for evaluating the MEG characteristics of arbitrary mobile antennas in various mobile communication environments. >

TL;DR: Several examples of reconfigurable antennas for both terrestrial and space applications are highlighted, such as cognitive radio, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and satellite communication.
Abstract: Reconfigurable antennas, with the ability to radiate more than one pattern at different frequencies and polarizations, are necessary in modern telecommunication systems. The requirements for increased functionality (e.g., direction finding, beam steering, radar, control, and command) within a confined volume place a greater burden on today's transmitting and receiving systems. Reconfigurable antennas are a solution to this problem. This paper discusses the different reconfigurable components that can be used in an antenna to modify its structure and function. These reconfiguration techniques are either based on the integration of radio-frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF-MEMS), PIN diodes, varactors, photoconductive elements, or on the physical alteration of the antenna radiating structure, or on the use of smart materials such as ferrites and liquid crystals. Various activation mechanisms that can be used in each different reconfigurable implementation to achieve optimum performance are presented and discussed. Several examples of reconfigurable antennas for both terrestrial and space applications are highlighted, such as cognitive radio, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and satellite communication.
