TL;DR: In the presence of overt emotional disturbance, of new psychological or psychophysiological symptoms preceding the rash by up to a year, and of high motivation for it, brief psychiatric treatment improves the outcome in eczema, whereas in their absence such treatment may worsen it, especially in the short term.
Abstract: Seventy-two patients with eczema were randomly allotted to one of two treatment groups: A, those receiving dermatological treatment only, and B, those receiving the same dermatological treatment plus psychiatric treatment, limited where possible to four months. Cases were followed up at six-monthly dermatological assessments, 57 (79%) for 18 months. The findings suggest that in the presence of overt emotional disturbance, of new psychological or psychophysiological symptoms preceding the rash by up to a year, and of high motivation for it, brief psychiatric treatment improves the outcome in eczema (the proportion clear at 18 months was about doubled), whereas in their absence such treatment may worsen it, especially in the short term.

TL;DR: Aminophylline appears to have a beneficial therapeutic effect when given in addition to other accepted medications in appropriate dosage and under careful medical supervision to hospitalized children with status asthmaticus.
Abstract: Significant improvement in ventilatory function without observable adverse effects has been demonstrated by this double-blind controlled trial of intravenous aminophylline in status asthmaticus. Aminophylline appears to have a beneficial therapeutic effect when given in addition to other accepted medications in appropriate dosage and under careful medical supervision to hospitalized children with status asthmaticus.

TL;DR: No undue side effects are noted but the malignancy control in the group given chemotherapy at a minimum of 3 years postoperatively is appreciably worse than in the groups not given this agent.
Abstract: A report is presented of a randomized clinical trial to investigate the effects of adding a chemotherapeutic agent, i.e., cyclophosphamide, to the routine modalities of surgery and radiation therapy in the radical treatment of operable carcinomata of the breast. The rationale, protocol and method are outlined and the results shown. Assessment of both immediate as well as longer term effects on malignancy is made.No undue side effects are noted but the malignancy control in the group given chemotherapy at a minimum of 3 years postoperatively is appreciably worse than in the group not given this agent.

TL;DR: A generous oral supplement of folic acid (5 mg a day) affected the duration of pregnancy or the birth‐weight of babies but there was no significant difference in effect between folic Acid and a placebo.
Abstract: The purpose of this double‐blind controlled trial in 692 pregnant women was to see whether a generous oral supplement of folic acid (5 mg a day) affected the duration of pregnancy or the birth‐weight of babies. The trial showed no significant difference in effect between folic acid and a placebo.

TL;DR: Careful control of arterial oxygen and the infusion of 10% glucose for the first 3 days of life failed to reduce the mortality rate in a group of 118 infants, but the patients with respiratory distress syndrome showed the most noticeable improvement in survival.
Abstract: Two controlled clinical trials were carried out in infants with a birth weight between 1,000 and 1,500 gm. Careful control of arterial oxygen and the infusion of 10% glucose for the first 3 days of life failed to reduce the mortality rate in a group of 118 infants. In the second clinical trial involving 120 patients, the mortality rate was reduced, especially in infants with clinical evidence of respiratory distress syndrome, by the addition to the regime of early vigorous efforts to correct acidosis. The mortality in comparable infants before the introduction of intensive care in 1965 was 49%. In the era of intensive care, 35% of patients given only routine care died, whereas infants receiving vigorous intensive care had a mortality rate of only 18%. The patients with respiratory distress syndrome showed the most noticeable improvement in survival.

TL;DR: Haloperidol was intended to evaluate its use, combined with orphenadrine, in stutterers, both with and without speech therapy, as shown in Table I.
Abstract: Stutter, tic and the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome have many features in common. Haloperidol has been found of value in the treatment of the last-named syndrome (1) and also of tic (2). Our study was intended to evaluate its use, combined with orphenadrine, in stutterers. We used it both with and without speech therapy, as shown in Table I. The trial was controlled, and double blind. Our 36 patients, aged 15 to 60, were of both sexes and neither psychotic nor subnormal. They were not on other therapy. They were randomly divided by an independent third party equally into the following groups, and treated as indicated.

TL;DR: During a 21-year period after a controlled trial of B.C.G.G.'s vaccination in Georgia and Alabama, 32 cases of leukaemia, 15 cases of Hodgkin's disease, and 13 cases of lymphosarcoma were identified among the study population.

TL;DR: Patients given cholestyramine had fewer symptoms, required fewer antacid tablets, and had a greater mean reduction in ulcer size, but none of these differences was statistically significant.

TL;DR: A double-blind trial of deglycyrrhizinated liquorice was performed in patients with active duodenal ulcer and no advantage of deglyscyr Rhizinated Liquice over placebo was found.
Abstract: A double-blind trial of deglycyrrhizinated liquorice was performed in 47 patients with active duodenal ulcer. Twenty-four patients received a placebo and 23 the trial medication (Caved-S) for one month. Both groups were clinically similar. No advantage of deglycyrrhizinated liquorice over placebo was found.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: No significant advantage of azathioprine over placebo was demonstrated in non‐re‐sponders to corticosteroids or corticotrophin in the trial, and it cannot be concluded from the trial whether or not the drug should be given to Corticosteroid‐responsive patients.
Abstract: A prospective, controlled trial of the therapeutic effect of azathioprine in 30 patients with multiple sclerosis was carried out. No significant advantage of azathioprine over placebo was demonstrated in non-re-sponders to corticosteroids or corticotrophin (p < 0.5). At the present time, it cannot be concluded from the trial whether or not azathioprine should be given to corticosteroid-responsive patients.

TL;DR: The recently completed controlled trial carried out in Veterans Administration hospitals indicates that in men with diastolic blood pressure levels of 90 through 114 mm Hg the risk of developing a morbid event over a five-year period was reduced from 55% to 18% by treatment.
Abstract: Progress in the development of effective antihypertensive agents is briefly reviewed. Evidence that drug treatment reduces the incidence of major complications is presented. The recently completed controlled trial carried out in Veterans Administration hospitals indicates that in men with diastolic blood pressure levels of 90 through 114 mm Hg the risk of developing a morbid event over a five-year period was reduced from 55% to 18% by treatment. The degree of benefit was proportional to the risk, which in turn was related directly to the level of blood pressure.
