TL;DR: In this article, the authors define formal law as "a framework within which substantive value judgments are made by private actors" and argue that formal law fulfills specific external social functions, such as establishing spheres of action for the autonomous pursuit of private interests.
Abstract: spheres of action for the autonomous pursuit of private interests. In doing so, it guarantees a framework within which substantive value judgments are made by private actors. Thus, "formalities" facilitate private ordering. They are "premised on the lawmaker's indifference as to which of a number of alternative relationships the parties decide to enter" (Kennedy, 1976: 1685; cf. Heller, 1979: 187). The corollary elements of formal law are: conventionality, legalism, and universalism (Habermas, 1976: 264; cf. Unger, 1976: 204). (2) With this orientation, formal law fulfills specific external social functions. Formal law develops its own system rationality insofar as it establishes spheres for autonomous This content downloaded from 207.46.13.80 on Thu, 11 Aug 2016 06:13:06 UTC All use subject to http://about.jstor.org/terms

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reveal the motivations for agri-tourism entrepreneurship among Virginia farm families and explore Weber's theory of formal and substantive rationality as a possible theoretical framework for agritourism entrepreneurs.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to reveal the motivations for agri-tourism entrepreneurship among Virginia farm families and to explore Weber’s theory of formal and substantive rationality as a possible theoretical framework for agritourism entrepreneurship motivation. Results of this study support the use of Weber’s theory of formal and substantive rationality as a framework for the dynamic nature of motivations for agri-tourism entrepreneurship between formal (primarily economic) reasons and substantive (primarily socio-cultural) reasons. Respondents indicated that Virginia farm families owned small farms, utilized farming as a secondary income source, and indicated their most popular agritourism activities to be pick-your-own produce, Christmas tree sales, hayrides, children’s educational programs, petting zoos, and on-farm festivals. Agri-tourism planners should be aware that acres owned, economic dependence on farming operation, and perceived popularity of agri-tourism activities are influential factor...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors model misrepresentation of intentions to competitors or enemies, starting from Hendricks and McAfee's (2000) example of the Allies' decision to feint at Calais and attack at Normandy on D-Day.
Abstract: Starting from Hendricks and McAfee's (2000) example of the Allies' decision to feint at Calais and attack at Normandy on D-Day, this paper models misrepresentation of intentions to competitors or enemies. Allowing for the possibility of bounded strategic rationality and rational players' responses to it yields a sensible account of lying via costless, noiseless messages. In many cases the model has generically unique pure-strategy sequential equilibria, in which rational players exploit boundedly rational players, but are not themselves fooled. In others, the model has generically essentially unique mixed-strategy sequential equilibria, in which rational players' strategies protect all players from exploitation.
