Abstract: As A RESULT of World War II, at least 25 per cent of the productive plant and equipment of the economy of Burma was destroyed Transport facilities, especially railroad trackage and rolling stock and shipping and port facilities, were even harder hit The impact of war upon the performance of the economy of Burma is quite clearly reflected in the national income accounts For example, the gross domestic product (GDP)1 for the fiscal year 1938-39,2 the last pre-World War II fiscal year, was K4,945 millions,3 in terms of 1947-48 prices, while the gross domestic product for 1947-48, the year in which Burma achieved its independence, was K3,557 millions Both aggregate real GDP and per capita real GDP fell by more than one-third during the period 1938-39 to 1947-484 As a result of the insurgency which beset Burma soon after independence was gained,5 the 1947-48 real'GDP level was not equaled again until 1951-52 The prewar 1938-39 level of real GDP was not regained until
