TL;DR: An analytical study of rear-end collision-avoidance warning systems using the Rear-End Accident Model and Countermeasure Simulation (REAMACS) Program suggests a significant advantage for warning algorithms using knowledge of lead vehicle deceleration in more severe crashes.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an analytical study of rear-end collision-avoidance warning systems using the Rear-End Accident Model and Countermeasure Simulation (REAMACS) Program. The purpose of the exercise was to estimate the effectiveness of warning algorithms that (1) utilize information about lead vehicle deceleration in their calculations and (2) warn drivers when the headway to a lead vehicle falls below some minimum. REAMACS generates rear-end collision situations in freeway traffic and models the effects of collision warning systems on rear-end crash rates. The model uses actual freeway traffic data and empirically-based analytical distributions for driver reaction time and lead car braking levels to generate the initial conditions that determine whether or not a crash occurs. Previously reported applications of the model indicate that collision warning has the potential to reduce the number of serious rear-end crashes in freeway traffic by as much as 60 percent. In the current application, REAMACS is used to estimate the relative benefits of (1) an algorithm based on closing rate and no minimum headway, (2) a closing rate algorithm with a 0.5 second headway warning, and (3) a closing rate algorithm with a 1.0 second headway warning. The analysis also compares the relative effectiveness of warning algorithms with and without knowledge of lead vehicle deceleration. The results suggest a significant advantage for warning algorithms using knowledge of lead vehicle deceleration, especially in more severe crashes. The addition of headway warnings also improves effectiveness, but primarily in lower speed crashes. Driver compliance with headway warnings is an issue.

TL;DR: In this article, a vehicle rear end collision preventing device is composed of a distance measuring device to measure the inter-vehicle distance between driver's own vehicle A and vehicle B, a communication device to receive the running information including the start of braking operation and deceleration of the vehicle B sent therefrom, and a warning device to emit a warning of rear-end collision upon acquiring the information on the vehicle including its braked condition.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle rear end collision preventing device capable of applying brakes to the driver's own vehicle with a proper strength and at a proper timing upon acquiring the information on the foregoing vehicle including its braked condition SOLUTION: The vehicle rear end collision preventing device is composed of a distance measuring device 1 to measure the inter-vehicle distance between driver's own vehicle A and the foregoing vehicle B, a communication device 2 to receive the running information including the start of braking operation and deceleration of the foregoing vehicle B sent therefrom, a warning device 3 to emit a warning of rear end collision upon acquiring the inter-vehicle distance and running information and judging the possibility of rear end collision to the foregoing vehicle B from the acquired information and the running speed of the driver's own vehicle A, and an automatic brake device 4 to apply brakes to the driver's own vehicle A so that its deceleration becomes greater than that of the foregoing vehicle B in case there is such possibility of rear end collision Thereby the brakes are applied to the driver's own vehicle A with a proper strength and at a proper timing by getting the running information including the braked condition of the foregoing vehicle B

TL;DR: In this paper, a rear body structure of a vehicle including a pair of right and left rear side frames and provided with a downward recessed tire pan at a rear part of the trunk floor panel 2 has a cross member 8 which is installed on a front side of the tire pan 3 and connects the right andleft rear side frame 1, and a power auxiliary engine 10 which is arranged on the crossmember 8 to be supported.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively absorb a collision load input in the case of a rear end collision of a vehicle, and to effectively protect a power auxiliary engine arranged in front of a tire pan.SOLUTION: A rear body structure of a vehicle including a pair of right and left rear side frames 1 and a trunk floor panel 2 and provided with a downward recessed tire pan 3 at a rear part of the trunk floor panel 2 has a cross member 8 which is installed on a front side of the tire pan 3 and connects the right and left rear side frames 1, and a power auxiliary engine 10 which is arranged on the cross member 8 to be supported. A tire 4 is installed in a falling state in the tire pan 3, and the cross member 8 is installed apart above the trunk floor panel 2. Installation heights of the cross member 8 and tire 4 are set respectively so as to move the tire 4 to a vehicle front side along a lower surface of the cross member 8 in the case of the rear end collision of the vehicle.
