TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe several oxidation reactions conducted either at high temperatures in the gas phase or at moderate temperatures in liquid phase; in both cases they proceed via a mechanism of oxidative dehydrogenation on the metal surface.

TL;DR: Results from filtration-mode experiments with p-methoxyphenol indicate that compound removal occurred by electro-assisted adsorption and subsequent oxidation, and illustrate the extreme promise of the REM for water treatment.
Abstract: This research investigates the characterization and testing of an anodic reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) for water treatment. The REM consists of a porous substoichiometric titanium dioxide (Ti4O7) tubular, ceramic electrode operated in cross-flow filtration mode. Advection-enhanced mass transfer rates, on the order of a 10-fold increase, are obtained when the REM is operated in filtration-mode, relative to a traditional flow-through mode. Oxidation experiments with model organic compounds showed that the REM was active for both direct oxidation reactions and formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH•). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data interpreted by transmission line modeling determined that the electro-active surface area was 619 times the nominal geometric surface area. Results from filtration-mode experiments with p-methoxyphenol indicate that compound removal occurred by electro-assisted adsorption and subsequent oxidation. Electro-assisted adsorption was the primary removal mechanism at ...

TL;DR: In this paper, in situ surface X-ray scattering measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) were used to determine the surface structural changes on single-crystal RuO2(110) as a function of potential in acidic electrolyte.
Abstract: While the surface atomic structure of RuO2 has been well studied in ultra high vacuum, much less is known about the interaction between water and RuO2 in aqueous solution. In this work, in situ surface X-ray scattering measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) were used to determine the surface structural changes on single-crystal RuO2(110) as a function of potential in acidic electrolyte. The redox peaks at 0.7, 1.1 and 1.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) could be attributed to surface transitions associated with the successive deprotonation of –H2O on the coordinatively unsaturated Ru sites (CUS) and hydrogen adsorbed to the bridging oxygen sites. At potentials relevant to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), an –OO species on the Ru CUS sites was detected, which was stabilized by a neighboring –OH group on the Ru CUS or bridge site. Combining potential-dependent surface structures with their energetics from DFT led to a new OER pathway, where the deprotonation of the –OH group used to stabilize –OO was found to be rate-limiting.

TL;DR: Benefiting from the enhanced charge separation and transfer processes, the In2S3 nanosheets with S vacancies could simultaneously activate O2 into superoxide radicals via electron transfer under visible-light irradiation to display outstanding activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes with high conversion and selectivity.
Abstract: Photocatalytic selective oxidation reactions hold great promise for the design of high-value-added organic intermediates, but many of these reactions suffer from low conversion efficiency and selectivity due to uncontrollable oxidation processes. In view of using photogenerated reactive oxygen species as the key oxidant in a selective oxidation reaction, we propose that a highly selective oxidation reaction can be achieved by modulating the corresponding photocatalytic molecular oxygen (O2) activation processes. Using cubic indium sulfide (β-In2S3) nanosheets as a model system, we show that the charge carriers involved in O2 activation can be optimized with the introduction of surface S vacancies. Benefiting from the enhanced charge separation and transfer processes, the In2S3 nanosheets with S vacancies could simultaneously activate O2 into superoxide radicals via electron transfer under visible-light irradiation to display outstanding activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes with hi...
