Abstract: In Singapore 14 women in early pregnancy 23 in the 3rd trimester and 24 non-pregnant women ages 18-42 were studied for calorie and nutrient intake. The study showed a 13% increase in body weight at term in contrast to an 18% increase for American women using height adjustments. Although intake of calories and nutrients is less than NRCs recommended allowance there was only a deficiency of calcium and iron found in all 3 groups. Thiamin riboflavin and niacin equivalents were adequate for the 3 groups; however in late pregnancy ascorbic acid was high. For a well calcified skeleton adequate calcium in late pregnancy is suggested in addition to adequate iron for hemoglobin formation; although all 3 groups were healthy the pregnant women had normal pregnancies and all the babies were healthy.
