TL;DR: In this article, an optical detection system for selectively detecting gases comprises a light source emitting light thermally or mechanically modulated and supplied to a measuring cell, which can receive measuring gas directly, or is evacuated or filled with an inert gas which does not absorb in the measuring gas absorption range.
Abstract: An optical detection system for selectively detecting gases comprises a light source emitting light thermally or mechanically modulated and supplied to a measuring cell. The light source includes an emitter enclosed in an ellipsoid reflector. The ellipsoid reflector can receive measuring gas directly, or is evacuated or filled with an inert gas which does not absorb in the measuring gas absorption range. With measuring gas supplied directly to the reflector, the light emanating from the reflector is supplied to a wide-band detector, combined with a monochromator, e.g. an optical narrow-band filter. With an evacuated or inert gas filled reflector, after traversing a monochromator, the light is irradiated into a photoacoustic detection cell containing the measuring gas. The photoacoustic cell is completely or approximately closed during measurement. Devices, providing the acoustic decoupling in the photoacoustic cell during the measurement and gas exchanges, can include capillaries in the cell wall, liquid cutout devices, mechanical valves or diaphragm pump-valve combinations. Microphone signals processed by a lock-in amplifier operating in a digital off-line manner and controlled by a microprocessor can control the system. The gas scavenging and signal processing of several gas detector units can take place with a single processor unit.

TL;DR: A wide-angle IR imaging system has an entrance aperture (40) for admitting IR from a scene and a dewar (4A) that contains a coldshield (3) that encloses a cooled IR detector (2) disposed at an image plane (2A).
Abstract: A wide-angle IR imaging system (1A) has an entrance aperture (40) for admitting IR from a scene and a dewar (4A) that contains a coldshield (3) that encloses a cooled IR detector (2) disposed at an image plane (2A). The dewar includes a dewar window (4), and an optical axis of the IR imaging system passes through the dewar window and the image plane. The IR imaging system further includes a plurality of uncooled optical elements (22, 24, 26, 28) disposed along the optical axis between the entrance aperture and the dewar window, and a plurality of generally annular reflector segments (18A, 18B) disposed around the optical axis betwen the dewar window and the entrance aperture. Each of the reflector segments has a reflective surface that faces the dewar window. An opening through an outermost reflector segment furthest from the dewar window defines an effective cooled aperture stop, or warm stop (20A) of the IR imaging system, and at least one of the optical elements (22) is disposed between the effective cooled aperture stop and another one of the reflector segments (18A) that is located nearer to the dewar window. In the preferred embodiment the at least one optical element, and the reflector segment that is located nearer to the dewar window, are comprised of a single monolithic body (31) that has a compound optical surface.

TL;DR: In this paper, a side-fed offset Cassegrain reflector system with an RF signal emanating from an array of feed horns, and controlling an excitation of the subset of the feed horns is described.
Abstract: An antenna system and method for generating a desired contiguous spot beam pattern, and a signal is disclosed. The contiguous spot beam generating antenna system comprises a reflector system configured in a side-fed Cassegrain (SFOC) configuration, an array of feed horns comprising at least a subset of feed horns for illuminating the reflector system, and a beamforming network, communicatively coupled to the array of feed horns, for controlling an excitation of the subset of the feed horns in the array of feed horns. The method comprises illuminating a side fed offset Cassegrain reflector system with an RF signal emanating from an array of feed horns, and controlling an excitation of the subset of the feed horns. The present invention provides a beamformer network that can produce uniform performance over wide scan angles, is easier to integrate and test, that can change the beam pattern on orbit, and that provides a more complete utilization of space assets without dramatically increasing the cost of manufacturing and operating a satellite. The use of a SFOC configuration or other wide scanning antenna permits the use of a simple beamforming network while maintaining excellent beam beam scanning characteristics.
