TL;DR: In this article, a novel electromagnetic band-gap structure (EBG) with single-ring resonators is inkjet-printed on the commercially available photo paper using conductive nano-silver ink.
Abstract: In this letter, a novel electromagnetic band-gap structure (EBG) with single-ring resonators is inkjet-printed on the commercially available photo paper using conductive nano-silver ink. The printed EBG array is placed above a copper sheet, forming an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) reflector at the designed frequency range (2.4 ~ 2.5 GHz). A microstrip monopole antenna is backed with the designed AMC reflector and is tested in free space and in contact with a human phantom. The antenna gain of a conventional microstrip monopole on human phantom is as low as -9 dBi. The gain of the proposed AMC backed monopole, measured on a human phantom is 0.95 dBi. The measurements demonstrate superior performance of the proposed monopole with EBG array compared to a conventional microstrip monopole antenna when they are considered for wearable applications.

TL;DR: The use of interdigital PVDF transducers for the quick inspection of large, plate-like structures is discussed in this paper, where the transducers are designed to excite a particular Lamb mode in the structure, the region of the structure that is insonified being controlled by the transducer design.
Abstract: The use of interdigital PVDF transducers for the quick inspection of large, plate-like structures is discussed. The transducers are designed to excite a particular Lamb mode in the structure, the region of the structure that is insonified being controlled by the transducer design. An example is given of the monitoring of an aluminium plate by a single, circular transducer operating in pulse-echo mode, the a0 Lamb mode at a frequency of about 1 MHz being transmitted and received. The transducer is split into segments so that the angular location of a reflector can be defined, the radial location of the reflector being determined from the time of arrival of the echo.

TL;DR: In this paper, the axial backlobe of a circular parabolic antenna dish is reduced by providing variation of the phase of radiation diffracted at successive portions of the edge.
Abstract: The axial backlobe of a circular parabolic antenna dish is greatly reduced by providing variation of the phase of radiation diffracted at successive portions of the edge. The phase is varied by providing an edge configuration in which successive portions of the edge are at differing distances from the feed. A dual-polarized antenna employs a polygonal rim surrounding the round reflector. A large increase in front-to-back ratio is obtained. The theory of operation is described to enable use in other structures.

TL;DR: In this article, a rotatable combination of a dielectric lens and a reflective surface is placed proximate to and in front of an energy feed, such as a horn, to support the scanning of an antenna beam in response to rotation of the lens/reflective surface assembly.
Abstract: An antenna comprising a feed (42) for delivering electromagnetic energy to a rotatable combination of a dielectric lens (44) and a reflective surface (46). The combination of the dielectric lens and the reflective surface is placed proximate to and in front of an energy feed, such as a horn (42), to support the scanning of an antenna beam in response to rotation of the lens/reflective surface assembly. The lens typically comprises a dielectric material and the reflective surface can comprise a thin layer of material operable to reflect electromagnetic energy. For example, the lens can comprise a half-cylinder shape of dielectric material and the reflective surface can be applied to the flat portion of the half-cylindrical lens. Alternatively, the antenna can comprise two or more electromagnetic feeds (72a, 72b, 72c, 72d) and a cylindrical lens of dielectric material including a centrally embedded, two-sided reflective surface. A positioning system can be used to rotate the combination of the lens and the reflective material proximate to and in front of the electromagnetic feed(s).

TL;DR: In this paper, a semiconductor substrate and an edge-emitting radiation source are mounted on a surface of the substrate so as to emit optical radiation along an axis that is parallel to the surface.
Abstract: Optical apparatus includes a semiconductor substrate and an edge-emitting radiation source, mounted on a surface of the substrate so as to emit optical radiation along an axis that is parallel to the surface. A reflector is fixed to the substrate in a location on the axis and is configured to reflect the optical radiation in a direction that is angled away from the surface. One or more optical elements are mounted on the substrate so as to receive and transmit the optical radiation reflected by the reflector.
