TL;DR: Simple formulas and functions for the fiber parameters are presented as a help for practical design work that considers the propagation constant, mode delay, the cladding field depth, and the power distribution in the fiber cross section.
Abstract: Thin glass fibers imbedded into a glass cladding of slightly lower refractive index represent a promising medium for optical communication. This article presents simple formulas and functions for the fiber parameters as a help for practical design work. It considers the propagation constant, mode delay, the cladding field depth, and the power distribution in the fiber cross section. Plots vs frequency of these parameters are given for 70 modes

TL;DR: The measured optical spectra of the nanofabricated gold structures come very close to the theoretical expectations and additional numerical simulations show that the structures exhibit a frequency range with negative permeability for a beam configuration in which the magnetic field couples to the LC resonance.
Abstract: An array of single nonmagnetic metallic split rings can be used to implement a magnetic resonance, which arises from an inductor-capacitor circuit (LC) resonance, at 100-terahertz frequency. The excitation of the LC resonance in the normal-incidence geometry used in our experiments occurs through the coupling of the electric field of the incident light to the capacitance. The measured optical spectra of the nanofabricated gold structures come very close to the theoretical expectations. Additional numerical simulations show that our structures exhibit a frequency range with negative permeability for a beam configuration in which the magnetic field couples to the LC resonance. Together with an electric response that has negative permittivity, this can lead to materials with a negative index of refraction.

TL;DR: In this article, a general treatment of the scattering of radiation by an inhomogeneous material is developed, where scattering measurements can be used to obtain the average square of the fluctuations in refractive index or electron density and a correlation function which measures the degree of correlation between two fluctuations as a function of their distance of separation.
Abstract: A general treatment of the scattering of radiation by an inhomogeneous material is developed. It is shown how scattering measurements can be used to obtain the average square of the fluctuations in refractive index or electron density and a correlation function which measures the degree of correlation between two fluctuations as a function of their distance of separation. The scattering of visible light by Lucite and two glass samples has been investigated. The data are analyzed in terms of the quantities mentioned above. It is found that the extensions in space of the inhomogeneities in the Lucite sample are much greater than those in the optical glass samples investigated. The magnitudes of the fluctuations in refractive index are found to be dependent on the composition of the sample.

TL;DR: The first fabrication and experimental verification of a transversely structured metal-dielectric-metal multilayer exhibiting a negative refractive index around 2 microm is reported.
Abstract: Metal-based negative refractive-index materials have been extensively studied in the microwave region. However, negative-index metamaterials have not been realized at near-IR or visible frequencies due to difficulties of fabrication and to the generally poor optical properties of metals at these wavelengths. In this Letter, we report the first fabrication and experimental verification of a transversely structured metal-dielectricmetal multilayer exhibiting a negative refractive index around 2 mu m. Both the amplitude and the phase of the transmission and reflection were measured experimentally, and are in good agreement with a rigorous coupled wave analysis.
