TL;DR: In this paper, a methodology for exploring the concepts of professional knowledge, professional self-organisation and politics and professional development is proposed, which involves a systematic analysis of primary documentary sources including: (1) academic and professional journal articles and textbooks; (2) archives of relevant institutions and organisations; and (3) external evidence, such as inspection and research reports.
Abstract: This article calls for international comparative research on the professionalisation of Religious Education (RE). To this end, it provides a rationale for focusing upon the concept of professionalisation and a theoretical justification for international comparative research, particularly identifying its significance in terms of the development of RE in England and Germany. The article outlines a methodology for exploring the concepts of professional knowledge, professional self-organisation and politics and professional development. The proposed methodology involves a systematic analysis of primary documentary sources including: (1) academic and professional journal articles and textbooks; (2) the archives of relevant institutions and organisations; and (3) external evidence, such as inspection and research reports. An analytical case study of two leading journals in each national context, Religion in Education in England and Der Evangelische Erzieher in Germany, in the immediate post-war era is appended ...

TL;DR: The authors examines scale as an emergent dimension of sociospatial practice in educational institutions and describes how this educational practice has been placed as a rite of institution within the perimeter of Sera Monastery in India and rescaled into a more expansive diasporic pedagogy by reformers like the Dalai Lama.
Abstract: Rather than assume the relevance of a priori scalar distinctions (micro-, macro-, meso-), this article examines scale as an emergent dimension of sociospatial practice in educational institutions. Focusing on Buddhist debate at Tibetan monasteries in India, I describe how this educational practice has been placed as a rite of institution within the perimeter of Sera Monastery in India and rescaled into a more expansive diasporic pedagogy by reformers like the Dalai Lama. TL;DR: The authors explored the origins of the view that religions other than Christianity should figure in the study of religion in English universities and schools and argued that the current government's policy of insisting upon the primacy of Christianity and the separate and subordinate treatment of other faiths is at variance with the spirit of this important tradition in English theology and religious education.
Abstract: This, the first of two articles on the subject, explores the origins of the view that religions other than Christianity should figure in the study of religion in English universities and schools. It will be shown that the major impetus for such study came not from secularism but from late nineteenth and early twentieth century liberal Protestantism, influenced by philosophical idealism which saw all religions as deriving from humanity's common religious experience. It will be argued in this and the second article on the subject that the current government's policy of insisting upon the primacy of Christianity and the separate and subordinate treatment of other faiths is at variance with the spirit of this important tradition in English theology and religious education.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors aim to build on the work of those who have investigated elements of the spirituality of children and adolescents in a qualitative way, in order to understand how young people experience God, what they think about God, and how they relate to God.
Abstract: Children's and adolescents' spirituality is important, especially to those entrusted with their education. To effectively nurture children's spirituality, parents, teachers, and ministers would benefit in knowing how young people experience God, what they think about God and how they relate to God: in effect, their lived experience of God. Learning about these phenomena could help greatly in communicating with children and adolescents about God. This study aims to build on the work of those who have investigated elements of the spirituality of children and adolescents in a qualitative way.
