TL;DR: In this paper, a method for enhancing image quality of a coded digital video signal representative of at least one frame in a digital video system is provided, which comprises the steps of creating a usefulness metric identifying a limit to sharpness enhancement to be applied to the coded digital visual signal, defining local spatial features in the frame, and identifying a frame type for the frame.
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention a method of and a system for enhancing image quality of a coded digital video signal representative of at least one frame in a digital video system are provided. The method comprises the steps of creating a usefulness metric identifying a limit to sharpness enhancement to be applied to the coded digital video signal, defining local spatial features in the frame, and identifying a frame type for the frame. The usefulness metric created in the creating step is: UME = 1 - M * ( 1 + q_scale N ) 2 * q_scale num_bits max ⁢ ( q_scale num_bits ) wherein UME is the usefulness metric, q_scale is a quantization scale for a macroblock, num_bits is a number of bits to encode a luminance block, max is a function representing a maximum value for the frame, and M and N are scaling factors. The method further includes the steps of calculating a coding gain of each pixel in the frame based on the local spatial features and the usefulness metric in accordance with the frame type. Finally, the method also includes the steps of applying the coding gain to at least one sharpness enhancement algorithm, and generating an enhanced digital video signal by application of the sharpness enhancement algorithm.

TL;DR: In this article, a subtractive method of providing complementary fade-up and fade-down is proposed to reduce rounding errors in PCM audio frames by fading up and fading down a frame end and a frame appendage only at a splice point and overlapping and combining to provide a crossfade at the splice.
Abstract: Method for splicing PCM audio frames form modified frames by appending to each frame either a portion of the next preceding frame or the next following frame. According to a first approach, splices are obtained by fading up and fading down a frame end and a frame appendage only at a splice point, and overlapping and combining to provide a crossfade at the splice. Alternatively, every frame end and frame appendage is faded up and faded down, overlapped and combined. A subtractive method of providing complementary fade-up and fade-down reduces rounding errors.

TL;DR: In this paper, an information processing apparatus connected to a network to which plural information processing units are connected, in order to enable variation of the image frame rate in a specified information processing device, thereby displaying a watched image in a smoother manner or decreasing the frame rate of unwatched images to increase the frame rates of another image.
Abstract: An information processing apparatus connected to a network to which plural information processing units are connected, in order to enable variation of the image frame rate in a specified information processing apparatus, thereby displaying a watched image in a smoother manner or decreasing the frame rate of unwatched images to increase the frame rate of another image. The information processing apparatus comprises a configuration for recognizing an instruction for varying the amount of image data released from an arbitrary one among the plural information processing apparatus and controlling the amount of image data released from the arbitrary information processing apparatus according to the recognition.

TL;DR: In this article, an enhanced display encoder system for a video stream source includes an enhanced video encoder that has parallel intra frame and inter frame encoding units for encoding a video frame, wherein an initial number of macroblocks is encoded to determine a scene change status of the video frame.
Abstract: An enhanced display encoder system for a video stream source includes an enhanced video encoder that has parallel intra frame and inter frame encoding units for encoding a video frame, wherein an initial number of macroblocks is encoded to determine a scene change status of the video frame. Additionally, a video frame history unit determines an intra frame update status for the video frame from a past number of video frames, and an encoder selection unit selects the intra frame or inter frame encoding unit for further encoding of the video frame to support a wireless transmission based on the scene change status and the intra frame update status. A method of enhanced video frame encoding for video stream sourcing is also provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for encoding an uncompressed digital video bit stream was proposed, which comprises the steps of capturing successive frames of said video bit streams in an encoder system, determining statistics for each frame to make an encoding decision for the frame, the statistics of each frame being determined in a single field time, and encoding the frame in said encoding system in a manner responsive to said encoding decision to generate an encoded bit stream.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for encoding an uncompressed digital video bit stream. The video bit stream comprises successive frames, each of which includes one or more odd fields and one or more even fields. Such frames with more than two fields may result from a telecine process as discussed above. The inventive method comprises the steps of capturing successive frames of said video bit stream in an encoder system, determining statistics for each frame to make an encoding decision for the frame, the statistics for each frame being determined in a single field time, using a statistically valid subset of pixels from the frame, and encoding the frame in said encoding system in a manner responsive to said encoding decision to generate an encoded bit stream. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the statistically valid subset of pixels has a checkerboard pattern. Illustratively, the encoding decision involves dropping a repeated field in a frame and inserting a repeat field flag into the encoded bit stream.
