20 Jan 2006TL;DR: In this article, a motion estimation process in video coding takes into account the estimates in the immediate spatio-temporal neighborhood, through an adaptive filtering mechanism, in order to produce a smooth and coherent optical flow field at each pixel position.
Abstract: A motion estimation process in video coding takes into account the estimates in the immediate spatio-temporal neighborhood, through an adaptive filtering mechanism, in order to produce a smooth and coherent optical flow field at each pixel position. The adaptive filtering mechanism includes a recursive LMS filter based on pixel-wise algorithm for obtaining motion vectors in a reference image of a video image frame, while consecutively scanning through individual pixels of the image frame. This motion estimation process is particularly well suited for the estimation of small displacements within consecutive video frames, and can be applied in several applications such as super- resolution, stabilization, denoising of video sequences. The method is also well suited for high frame rate video capture.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for frame synchronization in a display circuit is achieved by first measuring a difference between a first frame period and a second frame period, and when the difference exceeds a threshold, the clock corresponding to the firstframe period is replaced by one of a slow frame rate and a fast frame rate.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for frame synchronization in a display circuit is achieved by first measuring a difference between a first frame period and a second frame period. When the difference exceeds a threshold, the first frame period is adjusted by replacing the clock corresponding to the first frame period with one of a slow frame rate and a fast frame rate. The slow and fast frame rates closely approximate an ideal frame rate that would synchronize the two frame periods. By switching between the slow and fast frame rates, the average frame rate approaches the ideal frame rate over time, and the two frame periods are effectively synchronized.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for dynamically determining group of picture (GOP) size as a function of picture change activity within a sequence of video frames is presented. But the method is not suitable for the analysis of video sequences.
Abstract: Method, system and computer program product are provided for dynamically determining group of picture (GOP) size as a function of picture change activity within a sequence of video frames. Image statistics on one or more intraframe characteristics of the sequence of video frames is compared to a preset threshold for deciding whether to continue within an existing GOP or to begin a new GOP. A frame of the sequence of video frames is intra-coded, and each of a variable number of subsequent frames is bi-directionally predictive-coded (B). Each B frame subsequent to the I frame is encoded employing forward prediction motion estimation only from the I frame. When a predefined picture degradation occurs, a new GOP is initiated. One example of an intraframe characteristic to be monitored is the number of intra-coded macroblocks within each B coded frame. This number is compared against a threshold number, which may be a percentage of the total number of macroblocks within the frame.

09 Feb 2001TL;DR: In this article, a method for synchronizing frames by using pilot patterns in a compressed mode is presented, in which perfect frame synchronization words in frames are restored by using dedicated pilot sequence pattern, and achieve frame synchronization by using correlation of the restored frames even if all the 15 slots of one frame are not transmitted.
Abstract: Method for synchronizing frames by using pilot patterns in a compressed mode. In a case a W-CDMA mobile communication system is operated in a compressed mode, the present invention permits to restore perfect frame synchronization words in frames by using dedicated pilot sequence pattern, and achieve frame synchronization by using correlation of the restored frame synchronization words, even if all the 15 slots of one frame are not transmitted.

TL;DR: In this article, a pipelined graphic engine includes a geometric processing stage for performing motion extraction, and a rendering stage for generating full image frames at a first frame rate for display at a second frame rate.
Abstract: A graphic system includes a pipelined graphic engine for generating image frames for display. The pipelined graphic engine includes a geometric processing stage for performing motion extraction, and a rendering stage for generating full image frames at a first frame rate for display at a second frame rate. The second frame rate is higher than the first frame rate. A motion encoder stage receives motion information from the geometric processing stage, and produces an interpolated frame signal representative of interpolated frames. A motion compensation stage receives the interpolated frame signal from the motion encoder stage, and the full image frames from the rendering stage for generating the interpolated frames. A preferred application is in graphic systems that operate in association with smart displays through a wireless connection, such as in mobile phones.
