TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore how fundraising efficiency is affected by changes in diversification of revenues in non-profit organizations and find that increased diversification leads to higher operational inefficiency that could be penalized by potential donors.
Abstract: This article explores how fundraising efficiency is affected by changes in diversification of revenues in non-profit organizations. It uses random effect regression and Arellano–Bond models to study this phenomenon in a sample of 10358 US non-profits during the 1997–2007 period. We find a negative impact on fundraising efficiency when NPOs alter their locus of dependence and change their pattern of diversification. This effect is impacted by organizational size and industry. Previous studies have suggested that income heterogeneity is associated with organizational stability and financial strength. Using a change (versus level) model of funding diversity, our work shows that increased diversification leads to a higher operational inefficiency that could be penalized by potential donors.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of CEO characteristics on R&D investment are contingent on board social capital, and the results show that board's social capital mitigates/enhances the negative/positive effect of CEO tenure/CEO educational level on research and development investment.
Abstract: The findings of the chief executive officer (CEO) characteristics–research and development (R&D) investment relationship remain incomplete if previous unexamined contingencies are not considered. Very few studies in this area have invariably focused on the constraints from the external environment and overlooked the important influence of board social capital on such relationship. This study uses insights from resource dependence theory to examine how the effects of CEO characteristics on R&D investment are contingent on board social capital. The results show that board social capital mitigates/enhances the negative/positive effect of CEO tenure/CEO educational level on R&D investment, supporting the view that board social capital, as an important conduit to link firms to critical information and essential resources in the environment, may offer better counsel to CEOs and enhance their decision-making capabilities in moving toward R&D. One important implication is that firms wishing to encourage innovation through R&D spending should consider nominating directors with rich social capital to the board because they may assist CEOs in coping with R&D complexities and acquiring requisite resources, leading to a better planning of R&D.

TL;DR: Examination of external environmental characteristics and organizational characteristics that relate to hospital participation in Medicare ACOs indicate hospitals operating in more munificent environments and more competitive environments are more likely to participate in ACOs.
Abstract: Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are rapidly being implemented across the United States, but little is known about what environmental and organizational factors are associated with hospital participation in ACOs. Using resource dependency theory, this study examines external environmental characteristics and organizational characteristics that relate to hospital participation in Medicare ACOs. Results indicate hospitals operating in more munificent environments (as measured by income per capita: β = 0.00002, p < .05) and more competitive environments (as measured by Health Maintenance Organization penetration: β = 1.86, p < .01) are more likely to participate in ACOs. Organizational characteristics including hospital ownership, health care system membership, electronic health records implementation, hospital type, percentage of Medicaid inpatient discharge, and number of nursing home beds per 1,000 population over 65 are also related to ACO participation. Should the anticipated benefits of ACOs be realized, findings from this study can guide strategies to encourage hospitals that have not gotten involved in ACOs.

TL;DR: This paper used resource dependence arguments and a sample of 431 relatively large cross-border acquisitions undertaken by U.S. firms to explore how the human and social capital of outside directors on the acquiring firm's board influence shareholder value creation.
