TL;DR: RDA includes a set of lower-level elements called Carrier Characteristics for describing these resource's properties; however, these elements have not enjoyed as much discussion in the professional literature as have the three higher-tier elements.
Abstract: In moving to Resource Description and Access (RDA), the change from recording a General Material Designation (GMD) to recording separate elements for Content, Media, and Carrier has attracted most of the cataloging world's attention. By themselves, these elements do not provide the user with enough nuance to perform the basic functions of finding, identifying, selecting, and obtaining materials. RDA includes a set of lower-level elements called Carrier Characteristics for describing these resource's properties; however, these elements have not enjoyed as much discussion in the professional literature as have the three higher-tier elements. Details of RDA's carrier characteristics are discussed and their shortcomings are analyzed.

TL;DR: A sixteen-week longitudinal study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of OCLC as a source of cataloging data and to optimize the timing of searches for cataloging copy for various categories of materials, and suggested that for many types of materials a holding pattern might be unnecessary.
Abstract: A sixteen-week longitudinal study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of OCLC as a source of cataloging data and to optimize the timing of searches for cataloging copy for various categories of materials. The findings indicated a high rate of success and, further, suggested that for many types of materials a holding pattern might be unnecessary. A midsized research library should be able to clear about half of its monographic receipts immediately, if it is willing to accept CIP copy. For materials not searched immediately, or for subsequent searches of materials not cataloged at once, the data may be used to determine the best timing and frequency of searches.

TL;DR: Analysis of the bibliographic citation and the content analysis of the selected Indian library journal articles revealed an unusually heavy reliance in their research and publishing activities by library practitioners in India and non-India library sources, especially from U.S. and U.K.
Abstract: A study was conducted of Indian library practice and research followed by a discussion of the growth in number of library periodicals in India. An analysis of the bibliographic citation and the content analysis of the selected Indian library journal articles revealed an unusually heavy reliance in their research and publishing activities by library practitioners in India and non-India library sources, especially from U.S. and U.K. It was also revealed that authors of the articles of Indian library periodicals repackaging the findings reported in overseas library journals in order to transmit information to practitioners in India whose access to mots overseas library journals is not easy. In essence, the library journals in India are carrying out a gatekeeper's function.

TL;DR: The challenges that Mississippi State University Libraries experienced in leading RDA enrichment for the Mississippi Library Partnership (MLP) consortium are presented and parameters for libraries to consider when working with a vendor for Rda enrichment in a consortial environment are discussed.
Abstract: This paper explores the benefits of establishing item-specific terms for General Material Designations (GMDs) for library consortia implementing Resource Description and Access (RDA). While RDA includes a new approach towards the description and categorization of an item’s physical medium through the assignment of content, media, and carrier types (CMCs), thus replacing the GMD, libraries may still benefit from GMD retention in their online catalogs to help support user tasks and help contextualize CMC information. This paper presents the challenges that Mississippi State University Libraries experienced in leading RDA enrichment for the Mississippi Library Partnership (MLP) consortium. Additionally, it discusses parameters for libraries to consider when working with a vendor for RDA enrichment in a consortial environment.
