TL;DR: Examining the use of electronic resources by lecturers of the University for Development Studies, Wa campus, it was discovered that inadequate Library infrastructure, low internet bandwith, and inadequate trained library staff were the major challenges confronting theUse of e-resources of the Library.
Abstract: Academic libraries are hub of knowledge and hence are considered as integral parts of academic life. Academic libraries have been in existence for over 500 years and are still very useful today to all educational institutions. The advent of Information and Communication Technology has led to the use of electronic resources in libraries. However, empirical studies have shown that the use of these resources by faculty members is very low. The objective of this study therefore, was to examine the use of electronic resources by lecturers of the University for Development Studies, Wa campus. Primary data were collected from 80 lecturers through the use of a simple random sampling procedure. The data were collected with the aid of a questionnaire and analysed through the use of binary logistics regression model. The results indicate that 88.8% of the respondents were users of the Library and 65% were aware of the availability of e-resources in the Library. This suggests that awareness is high but utilization is low. The determinants of eresource utilisation in the Library include purpose of Library visit and sources of awareness of the e-resources in the Library. Besides, it was discovered that inadequate Library infrastructure, low internet bandwith, and inadequate trained library staff were the major challenges confronting the use of e-resources of the Library. The study therefore, recommends that efforts to improve the use of e-resources in the Library should include ways of creating user awareness, training/workshops for users and staff, and responding to the challenges confronting utilisation.

TL;DR: It is contention is that technical seroices are not solely dependent on decisions their libraries make regarding electronic information, and should be a driving agent as well.
Abstract: The relation of libraries to the electronic information explosion has been a focus of discussion for several years, but the impact of this explosion on the technical seroices function within libraries has not been adequately explored. In what follows, my contention is that technical seroices are not solely dependent on decisions their libraries make regarding electronic information. They should be a driving agent as well.

TL;DR: What internal users of the catalog will find familiar in the new type of records and what will require a learning curve are shed on.
Abstract: Reference librarians' work will be affected by the upcoming change in cataloging standards from the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules to the Resource Description and Access (RDA). Reference librarians were asked to give their perceptions about RDA records. They found that RDA records were comparable in terms of quality and quantity of information. However, terms used in new fields that provide format information lacked clarity. RDA records live compatibly with their Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules counterparts but do have distinctive differences. This study sheds light on what internal users of the catalog will find familiar in the new type of records and what will require a learning curve.

TL;DR: The first formalized list of “general material designations” (gmds) was published in 1978 in the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, and since their introduction they have been controversial, as this investigation of the evolution ofmaterial designations explores.
Abstract: While directions for the use of “germane terms for the physical medium of the work” appeared in the 1964 Rules for Descriptive Cataloging in the Library of Congress: Phonorecords, most libraries choosing to integrate nonbook materials in their collections, either colour-coded their catalogue cards, or added two-digit media codes to call numbers. The first formalized list of “general material designations” (gmds)-placed immediately following the title proper as an early warning device-was published in 1978 in the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Since their introduction they have been controversial, as this investigation of the evolution of material designations explores.

TL;DR: The survey found that practitioners agreed upon a definite set of core cataloging competencies that all entry-level academic librarians should possess, which holds larger implications for library education for academicLibrarians and for the profession as a whole.
Abstract: The role of cataloging education within the library profession is a topic of considerable interest and debate. Fifty-five heads of reference and sixty-five heads of cataloging in Association of Research Librarians institutions responded to a survey based upon the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services Educational Policy Statement, Appendix: Knowledge and Skills, Intellectual Access and Information Organization, concerning the importance of cataloging competencies for all entry-level academic librarians. The survey found that practitioners agreed upon a definite set of core cataloging competencies that all entry-level academic librarians should possess. This finding holds larger implications for library education for academic librarians and for the profession as a whole.
