Abstract: Rice bran oil extracted by supercritical CO2 extraction (RB-SCE) reportedly exhibits pharmacological activities such as antioxidant and in vivo hair growth-inducing effects. Such activities raise the possibility of the development of novel hair growth-inducing agents using RB-SCE. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential genotoxic effects of RB-SCE in three short-term mutagenicity assays (bacterial reverse mutation assay, in vitro mammalian chromosomal aberration test, and in vivo micronucleus assay). RB-SCE showed no genotoxicity in the bacterial reverse mutation assay up to 5000 mg/plate and in the in vivo micronucleus test up to 600 mg/kg body weight. However, at 120 µg/mL with S9 mix and 200 µg/mL without S9 mix RB-SCE showed significantly different genotoxicity than the negative control in the in vitro chromosome aberration test. The induction of chromosomal aberrations under the present conditions may have no biological significance. We have herein demonstrated that RB-SCE can be regarded as a non-genotoxic material based on the available in vivo and in vitro results.

Abstract: Antioxidant properties of rice bran oil from different rice bran varieties; Rice Bran-Bario (RB-Bario), Rice bran-Lowland (RB-Low) and Rice Bran- Upland rice (RB-Up), collected from different cultural plots, were assessed. Measurement of antioxidant properties was evaluated byTPC(total phenolic content), DPPH scavenging activities and reducing power of extracts.. The study shows that antioxidant efficacy of rice bran was found the highest in RB-Up, followed by RB- Low and RB-Bario. The antioxidant properties were related to the rice bran origin and water irrigation demand by particular variety. RB –Up has a unique plantation condition which takes least amount of water retention which contribute to the highest antioxidant activity. Extraction solvents used shows that Upland (16.15%) and Lowland (16.16%) yielded the highest amount in conserving the crude fat oil in rice bran extract compared to Bario.

Abstract: The objectives of the study are to obtain optimum yield of extraction red rice bran oil, to determine the physico-chemical characteristics, and componen coumpounds. Data was analyzed using Nir Parametric Statistics by Friedmann test. The result showed the optimum extraction results was obtained by the ratio of substrate : solvent of 1: 8 and the oil yield was 12.31 ± 0.325%. The physico properties of red rice bran oil were greenish brown colour, with a density ranged from 0.908 ± 0.014 to 0.922 ± 0.014 (g/mL), and the water content ranged from 0.87 ± 0.06 to 0.91 ± 0.02 %. The chemical properties of red rice bran oil were: the acid number ranged from 116.41 ± 1.22 to 118.11 ± 2.45 (mg NaOH/g); the saponification number ranged from 193.74 ± 21.88 to 199.62 ± 12.63 (mg KOH/g); and the peroxide number ranged from 24.37 ± 2.44 to 26.07 ± 4.88 (mgek/kg), respectively. Oils was analyzed used GC-MS. The chemical components of rice bran oil are oleic acid (46.24%), palmitic acid (18.25%), linoleic acid (13.29%), 9-octadecane (7.76%).

Abstract: Rice bran is a by-product of rice milling industry and constitutes around 10% of the total weight of rough rice. It is primarily composed of aleurone, pericarp, subaleurone layer and germ. Rice bran is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber and other sterols. The quantification of γ-oryzanol in Rice bran can be performed by many methods that involve extraction of Rice bran oil from the bran, followed by analysis of the amount of γ-oryzanol in the Rice bran oil by HPLC. In order to determine the amount of γ-oryzanol in Rice bran oil it is very important to completely extract this fraction from the oil. Various extraction techniques have been used for the analysis of γ-oryzanol in Rice bran oil such as liquid–liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and direct solvent extraction. There is a widespread scientific agreement on various health benefits associated with consumption of dietary fiber. Consumer attitude towards health foods is promising and the scope of functional foods is growing in the world markets; rice bran is finding increased applications in food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to the physiological benefits provided by high fiber foods, studies have shown that fiber components can give texture, gelling, thickening, emulsifying and stabilizing properties to certain foods. Considering the importance of rice bran, this review aims to focus on the functionalities of rice bran, its health benefits and potential applications in food industry.
