TL;DR: In this article, a theory is presented which describes the lock-in threshold as a function of the beam path geometry, which is a helpful tool to minimize the lockin threshold by an optimization of the resonator geometry.
Abstract: Experiments on laser gyros with adjustable beam path geometry yield a strong dependency between the lock-in threshold and the distribution of the backscatter sources. Based on a simple vector formalism, a theory is presented which describes the lock-in threshold as a function of the beam path geometry. In accordance with the experimental results, the theory is a helpful tool to minimize the lock-in threshold by an optimization of the resonator geometry. The theory also offers an explanation of the fact that the quality of laser gyros often differs, even between gyros of the same production series, under the same operating conditions and with mirrors of comparable quality.

TL;DR: In this article, two ring laser gyro units (42, 44) were used to provide rotation information to the borehole survey system in order to improve the accuracy of the system.
Abstract: In order to improve the accuracy of borehole survey systems utilizing probes (18) with inertial components including inclinometers (32, 34, 36), two ring laser gyro units (42, 44) are included to provide rotation information to the system. When the probe (18) is moving in a borehole (12), inclinometer information is used to produce a synthetic rotation signal to take the place of a third gyro and the earth's rotation is used for a similar purpose in combination with signals from the two ring laser gyros (42, 44) when the probe (18) is stopped. Wire line velocity is used in combination with the inclinometer and gyro information to provide signals representing the probe velocity and position. Coordinate transformations are provided in the probe to transform the inertial signals and wire line velocity signals into earth reference coordinate system. Kalman filtering incorporates noninertial velocity data to reduce the effect of errors inherent in the generation of various input signals to the system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an active all-fibre ring resonator gyroscope based on stimulated Brillouin scattering was demonstrated, and the occurrence of guided acoustic modes in certain optical fibres was found to increase the lock-in range.
Abstract: An active all-fibre ring resonator gyroscope based on stimulated Brillouin scattering is demonstrated. The occurrence of guided acoustic modes in certain optical fibres is found to increase the lock-in range, and a novel method to reduce lock-in for this type of gyroscope is investigated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variable velocity gyroscope is mounted within a device shell and aligned vertically, and the direction of the moving device can be controlled by accelerating or decelerating the gyros.
Abstract: A remote control device that utilizes a variable velocity gyroscope for stabilization as well as directional control. The gyroscope is mounted within a device shell and aligned vertically. When the device is stationary or traveling in a straight line, the rotational velocity of the gyroscope is constant. The direction of the moving device can be controlled by accelerating or decelerating the gyroscope.
