Abstract: Terrain medelling is a common task for an engineer engaged in the field of river engineering. In the past three decades, a number of methods for terrain modelling haVe been proposed in surveying, civil engineering and in other fields. However, workers in different fields do not wish to achieve the same objectives. In river engineering, the data features and data collection methods are different from those in other fields. Therefore, a selection of suitable methods for terrain modelling that match the data features to obtain accurate terrain models is of importance. This paper deals with the methods for terrain modelling in river engineering. Attempts are made to summarize the methods. The problems and suitability of the methods associated with river engineering are discussed. Finally. some suggestions as to the selection of the terrain modelling methods are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of constructing detention ponds for flood control in basins immediately upstream an urban area, are studied and compared with conventional localized river engineering countermeasures regarding socio-economical aspects.
Abstract: In this paper effects of constructing detention ponds for flood control in basins immediately upstream an urban area, are studied. Comparisons are made between this practice and conventional localized river engineering countermeasures regarding socio-economical aspects. The study is conducted in Abkharvar urban basin in Behbahan city in the Khouzestan Province, in southwestern Iran. Based on the design flood routing, the effects of detention ponds on the dimensions of the conveyance canal are studied. Total costs of flood control alternatives are then compared. Results show that regarding socio-economical issues, detention ponds are superior to conventional localized river engineering and flood control countermeasures for flood control purposes in urban basins.

TL;DR: The River Lavant is a small ephemeral chalk stream, which is culverted through the city of Chichester as mentioned in this paper, and a permanent flood alleviation scheme was developed through the planning process.
Abstract: The River Lavant is a small ephemeral chalk stream, which is culverted through the city of Chichester. In 1994 widespread flooding resulted when the capacity of the culverts was exceeded and the river overtopped its bank. Subsequently a local multi-agency Strategic Coordinating Group was formed, and a permanent flood alleviation scheme was developed through the planning process. In November 2000, after a period of very heavy rain, the River Lavant again threatened flooding. A large-scale pumping operation to divert some water around the city was brought into place by the Fire Brigade. Additional alleviation capacity was urgently needed, and local design resources were committed to adapt the permanent scheme for rapid implementation. The project comprised several major pumping operations and open channels over 5 km long with a choked diversion to protect the village of Merston. The A27 trunk road and the railway embankment carrying the mainline along the south coast lie across the route. Piped crossings we...
